All I see them being fed is the shittiest "cooking" bananas ..... the ones no-one eats just for frying !!!!!!!
Uuuuuuuuuuuuummmmmmmm ..... I think the poor health of the orangutan may have something to do with the lack of trees in the cage .... the cage full stop ...... you are what you do with what you eat .....
I wonder what they do feed them, maybe it's too high in fat and that is causing sugar problems? Via on here was noticing a not so good diet being fed to primates at a sanctuary she visited.
Yea, in general, studies of feeding apes high sugar fruit diets have proven to have deleterious effects, it seems because they're not adapted to those high sugar levels. Humans have much greater concentrated sugar needs than the other apes because of our brains. It seems that apes to much better when the bulk of their diet is comprised of non-sweet fruits, since most fruits that apes eat, especially chimps, and lowland gorillas, are extremely fibrous figs. Then if you get into mountain gorillas it's almost exclusively leafy plant matter close to or on the ground. I'll admit though I'm not quite as familiar with the orangutan diet since orangutans are not as conducive to our understanding of humans.
In this wonderful book, Songs of the gorilla nation, the author says the first time she was touched by a gorilla was the first time she knew what it was supposed to feel like to be touched by another.
I called the St. Louis zoo to see if we could give some organic bananas to the gorillas to eat when we visited and they said no.
Orangoutangs are amazing!
