Diana- I would start out by setting up a meeting by saying "I'd like to discuss my dietary needs with you as they are not being met with the current options available" and in the meeting, explain that you are a raw vegan eating a FRUIT based diet (my director was under the impression that I ate lots of nuts and seeds so I had to correct that) and then ask what they can do for you. Maybe they'll be able to order extra fruit from whoever they buy food from or maybe you can pick out your own groceries like I do and then they'll pay for it. Who knows exactly what they'll offer but definitely talk to them and don't be shy!
I was wondering how you approached talking to your dinning common director? What did you say? I want to talk to my director but I do not know how to go about it.
Awesome--Thanks Kelsey! I definitely need to make better friends with the banana..
Erica-BANANAS! I know they get old but they really are the cheapest calorie source. Raisins are also cheap for the calories you get.
The grocery store i go to often has discounted fruit that has "started to go bad" which usually means it's actually ripe! I've literally gotten bags of 5-6 oranges for $0.50 :D
Also try to only buy other fruits (grapes, melons, etc) when they're on sale-and don't be afraid to shop around at different stores.
Also, I've seen people post here on 30BAD about dumpster diving-saying that stores often throw out perfectly ripe fruit because it has "gone bad". I've never done it but it wouldn't hurt to look into i guess!
Can you go into more detail about how you managed without a meal plan? I am living off campus without a meal plan and am struggling to afford all of this fruit!
It's so nice to see that other students are giving it a go! Thanks for the video!
I love finding other college students on this path too! I'm so glad to see lots of us getting into HCRV so young :) I was thrilled with how my school was able to accommodate me-just regretting not talking to them last year!
I love finding other raw vegan college students :) You're so right though, bananas are your best friend as a student. Cheap, calorie-dense, and easy to eat! Awesome to hear that your school is so accommodating of your lifestyle.
