Ecologist, author and cancer survivor, Sandra Steingraber, Ph.D. is an internationally recognized authority on the environmental links to cancer and human health. Sandra’s highly acclaimed book, Living Downstream: An Ecologist’s Personal Investigation of Cancer and the Environment presents cancer as a human rights issue.
Living in upstate New York, Sandra has personally been affected by industry interest in opening up the northeast to fracking. Sandra and her local community came together to ban fracking in their town, resulting in a legal battle over the rights of local government to reject industrialization. In this video excerpt from the Bioneers: Revolution from the Heart of Nature Series XIII radio program, "The New Abolitionists: Farewell, Fossil Fuels," Sandra talks in-depth about the challenges of encroaching energy exploration on local communities.
