Darn I'm 4 years late to reply to drama

Comment by Chris P. on March 16, 2014 at 9:56pm

The more years I live and the more wars I see, the more I feel like most wars are for the profit of people far removed from them and thus should be avoided at all cost. That said, I would never belittle a person who feels they are willing to stand in the gap for others, even unto death.

@ Tobi, one more comment as the last you made to Bevon, and I will suspend you. Not because you asked a question, but because of the way and manner in which you asked it. You could easily friend-request and send a private message to Bevon if there is no other way to word your question than to belittle him. Buty asking belittling questions, in front of others is once again trolling.
In fact, I am going to go take care of the horses now because I feel like suspending you now. Here's why. I specifically asked you to keep it positive, as have a number of other mods already. You you could not figure out a way to ask Bevon without saying:

would you go fighting in the middle east for example? or why are you in the military, what are you doing there? just to leech in the salary and quiting when they want to sent you to war or what?

You could have very easily asked Bevon "Maybe you can ask yourself what your motivations are for joining and then think about how you would feel if forced into a situation where you have to fight, even kill, and possibly for a reason or reasons you do not fully agree with. Is it worth any benefits you might gain from military service? Will you be able to live with possible ramifications?"

See/ That is a respectful and honest question. My guess is that Bevon has already done those calculations and likely come to an answer for himself you will disagree with, or even if he hasn;t, he is in and cannot back out, but can try to be as conscious and good a soldier as he can be and may even be able to make some courageous decision(s) while in that could really positively affect other soldiers and people no matter where he goes. Even if nothing more than people seeing a warrior who refuses to participate in the degradation and mistreatment of animals. And yes there may be inconsistencies there that he will have to wrestle with, but I am glad it looks like he is willing to do so.

Your questions have already assumed he is a jerk and you are trying to further bait him and I will not put up with anyone coming on here and doing that. If some person started baiting you, I would react in the same way, so cut it out, now.

Windlord, it's like you've never even heard of the Kent State massacre..

Tobi, what is your purpose in intentionally baiting Bevon?  I'm sure there are places online where this is acceptable behavior, but 30BaD is not one of them.

My associate Chris P is correct that your opinion alone isn't cause for dismissal, but how you share it well could be.  Carefully read our guidelines, which detail the sort of respectful interaction required off all members, yourself included:

If you find such decorum unacceptable, please implement the advice given here:

You don't have to agree with Bevon's choices in life.  I'm sure even he doesn't always agree with each and every one of his orders.

But I am honored that men and women like him are willing to sacrifice their very lives for our right to offer such questions.  It's easy to rag on them when life is sweet, but when the worst happens, as it certainly can and does in life, it is to people like Bevon to whom we turn looking for help.  To quote from a favorite movie of mine, simply put they "stand on the wall, and say nothing is going to hurt you tonight."

And even if I am alone in my view, I shall remain eternally grateful for such selflessness.

Wow. I wouldn't even know where to begin after reading this thread.... Shame on you for posting such negative banter! WTG Brevon! I'm oober proud of you coming from a military family myself and having a military bf.

@ Bevon, I think from the things you are doing it is plain that you do have self respect and also want to make a good life. I too worked 2 jobs and put myself through school, and know you have to have some sort of self respect to take that on, otherwise why bother?

Comment by Bevon Ingraham on March 15, 2014 at 2:05am
Apperently tobi has his world views fixed and hes pretty confident that I have no self respect because I joined the military.

I think that sentence is all I need To read to not waste my rime arguing with a person like yourself.

Good luck.

Did you see my lack of respect their tobi?
Im a monster. I need to be stopped.

I was 103d MI, 3rd ID 25 years ago.  I learned Russian and still speak fluently.  Good luck with being vegan, I know it is a lot harder in the military.

Come on Tobi, let's not get silly here. If you honestly don't see how your post was sort of a mean sneak attack, I've let you know now. I or any mods here will never ban someone for an opinion they don't agree with, unless it is in direct violation of site policy and even then, we will try to let the person know first. We get no pleasure out of suspending or banning people, we just want to keep things positive and helpful here. A person can go to any of thousands of sites if they want to fight and tear each other down. That's just not the vibe we want here.

And yes there have been threads stopped because people were getting too negative, even on eating styles we all disagree with. There's a difference between "putting out the message" or "educating" and being mean. But you're not going to be able to verbally jump a meat eater here because if someone posted about eating meat, etc here it wouldn't stay long, it's a vegan forum.

Just so you know we Americans don't all worship the military. Making generalizations seems to be a pattern in this conversation. It makes me uncomfortable too, when it seems like people are treating anyone in uniform as if they are automatically saints or something. I like people to be nice AND thoughtful. I don't think there's too much that is knee jerk, that is good, except maybe knee jerk compassion. However, that said, many people in uniform enlist with a heart for service and actually want to serve the "greater good" as they understand it. I believe that sort of spirit should be nurtured and educated if it is mistaken, not crushed. Some people in uniform are terrible people, but so are some people in NGOs or in ministry or activism. Some people in uniform are incredibly selfless and helpful and compassionate. I try to make it a habit not to judge anyone based on only the externals.

I think perhaps you can try not speaking "out of school" and you wont tread on toes needlessly. From my European relatives, to the foreign exchange students we host, I think pretty much everybody appreciates that sort of thoughtfulness.

IMO there are not too many people I personally hold in lower esteem than Kissinger and his ilk. Realpolitik really pushes my buttons. I don't like any sort of philosophy that seeks to use people as some sort of widgets, the sort of cold calculus that would not recall cars because it is cheaper to settle wrongful death lawsuits than do a recall to fix the cars as Ford did some years ago.

Anyway, don't keep your mouth shut, but do be thoughtful about what you are saying, just ask yourself how you would feel if someone said it to you. There is a time to be shocking I agree, but consider the audience.
