Hi,

I learned of your site first via critics of 30bad, but quickly dug DR and Freelee's videos and they spoke true to me.

Anyways, my mom was always getting humane society's mailings, and other anti-vivisection requests for money which sorta exposed me to animal welfare when I was a teen, and even back then I wished that I could go vegetarian, but at that time I thought it was impossible because my mouth seemed to rebel at the idea having been raised on meat, dairy, soda, candy, TV diners, etc.. Whenever I would see pictures of vegetarians (didn't know about vegan back in the day), they seemed to always be standing proudly in front of disgusting (to my pallet then) vegetables! To make matters worse - back then the only "vegetarians" I knew of would still eat fish and poultry and carried around pill organizers full of vitamins - I was like "WTF!!!? - which doubly confirmed the futility of vegetarianism for me.

Fast forward 25 years of so, I reached a point of despair with my life in general, and that feeling seemed to give me an opening to allow myself to consider new options. It was a pivotal point in my life where I actually felt like I could do something to make my life better - I started down a "spiritual" path. Right after then I was shopping for another radical change in my life and ran across fruitarianism. I thought: "Hey I hate vegetables, but I like fruit - give it a go!" So I did - for about 30 days.

I made all the classic errors: WAY too many nuts, didn't keep track of my calories, didn't have any greens at all, and I was also too dogmatic with how I ate - latching onto a mono-meal scheme that in my book now is too advanced for me (then and now).

Additionally, I really separated myself from society with my dripping contempt for people who didn't eat like me. Wow, what a jerk I was.

This was early 2006.

I started to falter around day 30, and added sprouted breads, and one thing lead to another where I was considering dairy again, and then logically I thought about how meat is almost better cruelty-wise. I gave up and went back full-on SAD.

Going back to SAD was a humbling experience given the contempt I felt towards others whilst doing the fruit experiment. But I sure learned a lot.

All during this time, I was seeking enlightenment and found informal meditation and self-inquiry, and I really honed my truth seeking abilities.

Then in 2008, I happened upon a Peta video and their "Vegan Starter Kit" (pamphlet) which showcased a bunch of junk-food vegan food, and I realized that I could indeed go vegan for good. But how I framed it - "I'll do this full-tilt for one year, and then re-evaluate", and so I did.

I didn't lose any weight of course, and I wasn't any healthier, but at least I wouldn't be creating this market demand for more pain and suffering that I could no longer deny.

I chugged along like this for years, very slowly cutting out the worst stuff, and then in early 2011 I encountered the green smoothie concept and bought a Blendtec to see if "they" weren't kidding about their benefits. Right away - like the next day I was sold (and haven't missed one day since!). I was feeling GREAT!

All this time since 2009, I was watching my weight (a must on SAD) with a food tracking app for my iPhone, and I noticed that my carb to fat to protein ratios were right in line with this "crazy" 80/10/10 diet. "Could it be the ratio/fruit more than the greens?" I pondered, and put it in the back of my mind to see if it would blossom (having learned along my path thus far that I cannot install a policeman in my head for these things).

I kept watching 80/10/10 YouTube stuff (DR & Freelee), bought the 80/10/10 book, and now am actively leaning towards doing this diet full-time.

At this time I'm probably about 80% raw, and I've 100% vegan in my diet. I do still eat some bad junk (but still Vegan) when I'm out working, but try not to, but like I said, I won't install a cop in my head here.

I want to transition 100% as much as possible.

Wow that was a lot. Time to munch some dates...

Hi Karen - hope you're well. I just read the post you left last september about your iodine supplementation - I was wondering if you are still supplementing and at what dosage? Did the positive effects of taking the iodine continue or did they wear off? Best, Nathan.

Karen,  I've just read your comments on Karen's Page and studied your pictures.  How did you get so thin?  How did you get such big muscles?  I empathize with your spiritual search, but the web site you suggested to me shows that the guy is looking for money.  I'm very leary of that.  I think that means that what he says is for money; it may not be "Truth."

I've recently tried AA, OA and alanon for my spiritual approach.  AA recommends that "anonymity is a spiritual foundation of our group.  I am anonymous because I believe that allows Lee Mack, retired on social security, to talk with all kinds of people without age, gender, status, or "social position" getting in the way.

I'm trying to build a group of supportive friends to help me do this thing.  I'm facing some obesity-related, chronic, degenerative diseases that could get serious in the next few years, if I can't find a way to lose weight, bring my cholesterol, glucose level and blood pressure down.  I also have sleep apnea--which means that I don't get rejuvenative sleep.  My hormones, enzymes, metabolism, etc get messed up, and I have a harder row to hoe than most people.

I'm starting again, as of 6/12/12.  Today is Day 3.  I'm about 90 % raw, I suppose, because I had 2 cups of coffee (with non-dairy creamer), and a non-raw stir-fry sauce on my veggies.  Those are "no-no's," but I'm thinking that progress, not perfection is better than being too strict and having a total relapse.

What is your secret?

Lee
