30 Bananas a Day!

Ran out of ripe fruit to eat this week

It was partly because of lack of money (end of the month!), partly bad planning and partly bad luck (only green bananas everywhere). Managed to stay lfrv, but not exactly hcrv and promptly felt much worse as a result with next to no energy.

Today was payday, so I could finally order another case of dates. Actually, I ordered two cases, one 3kg case of very cheap, but also not very good non-organic dates because they tend to ship within 24 hours and a second 5kg case of slightly more expensive organic ones which will ship in about a week. Also stacked up on even more bananas and 5kg of mangoes.

My search for bulk buying opportunities continues. One of the two wholesalers I wrote to last weekend got back to me to say that they don't deliver to individuals. I haven't heard from the other one, but that probably means that I can cross them off my list, too. I did find an online fruit and veg shop that sells by the case. They appear to be attached to a wholesaler but I looked through their TOS and found nothing to indicate that orders are restricted to businesses. I might try placing an order in the near future and see what comes of it.

I know I'm a little late on this conversation, but I'm having the same problem. I do get a delivery of fruit from a co-op every week, but even the biggest box they offer is gone in a few days, and it's kind of an expensive box, so I'm looking for cheaper options for sure. The stores around here never have ripe fruit, and I haven't learned how to tell how long it will take something to ripen. It seems inconsistent to me, so sometimes I find myself with fruit that's gone bad seemingly overnight, or I have a ton of fruit and none of it is ripe enough to eat.

And odd thing I've discovered since I started eating so much fruit is that I can really tell when fruit doesn't taste ripe now, and I have no taste for it.  It's nearly as unappealing as a raw steak. I haven't learned necessarily what all fruits look like ripe, so I often bite into one only to discover that it is not ripe, and I end up wasting it.

The principles of this diet are so easy, but I wish there were just bountiful fruit trees everywhere to just pick fresh fruit off of! It would be so obvious that fruit is ripe if it was falling off the tree. =)  It would just make it that much simpler. =)

Unfortunately, I don't know how to drive. I live in a rural area, so I have been mainly contacting wholesalers in the area who do deliveries. Bulk buying from one of the grocery stores in the nearest town will be the next option on my list if I really can't find anyone who delivers bulk amounts. I'm determined to make this lifestyle work and I'm starting to realize that always having enough ripe fruit on hand is crucial :-)

It's amazing how hard it is to find raw bananas sometimes! But Chris' tips hit the mark. I don't buy bulk, but I do buy lots of bananas at various stages of ripe/unripeness and try to time it so I always have ripe. And where they look like they're 'too ripe' I freeze 'em for smoothies.

Keep rawkin'
