30 Bananas a Day!

No luck with wholesalers here in Germany

Having contacted a bunch of wholesalers in the last two weeks, I have come to the conclusion that it is near impossible to buy from fruit wholesalers as an individual here in Germany. Only two didn't turn me down outright, but one of them only does regionally grown fruit, which rules out my main staples. The other one would theoretically sell to me, but the minimum order amount for deliveries is double of what I can afford to spend on food in a month. Unfortunately, picking up smaller orders myself is quite out of the question since I don't know how to drive. Still, the owner, who seems to be a nice guy, did give me the name of one of his local clients, a small fruit and veg shop in the nearest town and said that they might be able to give me a better price if I buy by the case. Doesn't solve my problem of how to transport said cases home, but my parents do get into town every Friday, so they might be able to pick them up for me. If I can work out something with that shop's owner that is. When I dropped by there this morning, unfortunately he wasn't in yet and I couldn't wait because my parents wanted to drive back. Still, I did pick up some amazing green grapes, a lovely papaya and a bunch of okay but somewhat unripe plums.

Danke für die Tipps!

Ich wusste nicht, dass es hier eine Deutschlandgruppe gibt. Werde mich mal dort umsehen.

Ich wohne in einem Dorf bei Göppingen, ca. 40km von Stuttgart entfernt.

The hard part is setting it up, after that it'll be easy and well worth the effort!  So the one place will deliver to you if you order twice what you can afford?  I would go for that and find others to join you in a co-op type system.  You can charge a 10% fee for your work, ordering and such, it'll still be much cheaper than if they get it from the store.

Thanks for your suggestions. I already though about pooling orders with some other people in order to reach the minimum order value at the wholesaler's. I know a few raw fooders in my area, but they are unfortunately not big fruit eaters, so I might have to look elsewhere.

Right now I'm hoping the things with the fruit and veg store will pan out. Who knows, I might eventually recover my health to a degree where I can hold down a job again!

For the one where the minimum order is too expensive, perhaps you can find other people to share the cost with you?  Maybe even start your own small co-op?

Also, if you "make friends" with produce people at different stores, you may be able to get price breaks in various ways.  Like buying "very ripe about to go bad if it isn't eaten or frozen quickly" fruit at a discount, or being a regular customer such that they give you a price break because you are buying so much from them.

About carrying cases home, maybe you can find friends to split with and carry one or more cases home with you?  I know it may be too much effort to find people to do this with, but it could possibly be a way to meet people, have fun and get some exercise together walking.  Or if your parents can pick up the cases you could divide them up among people once they got back to your house if not keep it all yourself.
