30 Bananas a Day!

Lupus and coming to this lifestyle :) (sorry if its slightly melodramatic)

Yo Fruities,

I guess I just wanted to do a little intro. Basically, 3 1/2 years ago I was diagnosed with Lupus. In that time I was given loads of meds, including those buggers, catabolic corticosteroids. Coz of those things I went from a fairly healthy 64kg, to 90kg, from all of the water retention, and the swelling (edema) caused by the lupus :(

Last May I stumbled onto this lifestyle, and I knew it was the answer! After doing all of this research, I realise that being a HCRV makes sense, and its my sure way of getting back to optimum health! I switched to the lifestyle, and overcame my depression, and lost 10kg :)

But unfortunately, for whatever reason, my Lupus wasn't in tune. In December just gone, my kidneys got a lot worse. I'm on the highest dose of steroids, and I've gained back all that weight and then some, in water. Seriously, my face is double the size of a normal person. I can store things in my cheeks.

But its not that the lifestyle didn't work. The way that Lupus is, it was already worsening, and just a couple of months of HCRV wasn't going to reverse the effects of my lifelong chronic illness. These things take time. This lifestyle WILL work.

I had to come back from uni, and with no funds to keep me going, aka money for food, I haven't been able to keep up my lifestyle. The family is little to no help- they want me to have "all my strength" to fight the disease, and they don't want me getting a "calcium or B12 deficiency" and of course the classic "but...protein?".

But I know I've found the answer, and I'm now going to implement this lifestyle properly. I think the worst thing about all this is that I'm doing everything right, but I still look like a lard-arse who eats a tonne and does no exercise!

I'm only 19, and the last almost-4-years of my life have been hell. But you know something? the only way is up :)

lots of love

How's it going?  I found this awesome testimony:

Fasting and 100% Raw Vegan Diet Helped Reverse Stage 3 Kidney Disease

I watched forks over knives today actually :) I have managed to convince my family to get a weekly huge organic fruit and veg box delivered to us from our local farm :) that, and I'm slowly subbing dairy free quorn into their meals....haha baby steps :) they don't even notice the difference. They understand the logic behind it, but for the most part are set in their ways, about dairy especially. I know not to push- i just have to be the shining testimonial to make them believe. It does make my journey slightly harder, but I'll manage :)

thanks again for the link! Its so lovely to have such great support :D

Very glad to hear you were feeling fantastic, that's a very good sign!  Listening to the body is good but we also need objective info. to be fully informed.  Using a food tracker like cronometer is almost essential for success.

PK has kidney issues and would be a great resource for you.

Sounds like getting your family on board might be a worthwhile task.  The book The China Study and the film Forks Over Knives are both in the U.S. library system, maybe they will be in yours as well, they are both fantastic to share with family.

woah thank you for the info! i'll be sure to look into the apple thing, though I do tend to eat at least 4 a day :) I do like my apples :)

Yeah I know about the protein thing with my kidneys, so i knew I was on the right path with going just veggie. I didn't understand it at first, but I got my doctor to send over the bloods. Its hard to explain, but my kidney function was deteriorating from last september. I think the key thing here is that all of my other symptoms improved DRAMATICALLY, after just a few months. The kidney disease, being a bit more of a hardcore problem, was going to take longer to fix anyway, and by no means did I think it was going to take a few months to start reversing. There's too much residual crap in my body to deal with from eating so crappy this whole time. But honestly, if I hadn't had those bloods, I wouldn't have known, because I felt fantastic. If anything, my problem was under-eating, but not purposefully! I ate as much as I wanted, but I got full so easily! After a box of grapes I'd be done! But I'm learning! Its a rocky road to recovery, and I'm on lots of meds for the kidney disease, but hopefully now that I'm back on the bandwagon, HCRV will see me through :)

Low protein is so imoprtant for your kidneys.  So you think your kidneys got worse as a matter of the course of the disease?  Are you sure you were meeting all the HCRV lifestyle factors, sugar, water sleep?  Lack of sleep can wreak havoc on the body.  Same with dehydration and under eating.  Are you also sure your fruit was always ripe?  What about proper food combing?  These are some common things people over look, even long term.

Heavy metals are the leading cause of auto-immune diseases, you may be interested in a thread on the topic: http://www.30bananasaday.com/forum/topics/ms-md-als-lou-gehrigs-dis...

Make sure you don't ever consume green powders, they are known for heavy metal contamination.  Apples are great for removing heavy metals.  Fresh made apple sauce is an easy way to get lots of apples in for a decent 600 calorie meal.

no i was never vegan before. But i feel that my arthritic symptoms have gone down massively after going vegan. I'm aware of the moon face thang, and that's certainly true for me. The extra water retention is a mixture of the steroids, and my lupus nephritis (nephrotic syndrome) which means my kidneys aren't filtering properly, so i've got A LOT of edema build up as well. so unfortunately its not just the face. I have like three different shoe sizes depending on the day xD my steroids are pretty high now, but i'm tapering down ever so slowly, so hopefully i'll see my cheekbones again one day :)

Were you vegan before 80-10-10? I also have lupus and have kept it in check almost completely just by being vegan. The extra weight has nothing to do with what you're eating. High-dose and or long-term steroids cause "moon face", where your face gets rounder and flatter. I had that a couple times when my meds were upped to fight lupus flares. I was diagnosed with lupus at 26, hospitalized several times, switched my diet to vegan at 30 and have had zero flares since. I'm 42 now.

haha thank you! but I don't think I'm brave- simply suffering with something doesn't qualify me as being brave I don't think :) but that's ok. I just want to spread the message that this is the way to go. This definitely brings me strength :D thank you! xx
