Freelee's Challenge: Banana Girl Challenge Update

I have not been successfully following the BG Challenge this month.  I need to be a lot more prepared so that I have adequate ripe fruit at all times.  I stayed raw but under-ate the first few days of the month, and then went back to cooked salty dinners.  I had I had a great raw day today, and will possibly try again for the full 30 days in November, but honestly, the sad fact is, I may be unable or unwilling to ever commit to this diet.  Let's face it, it's been almost 7 years of "transition."  And realistically, I would probably have to stick to bananas, dates and lettuce most of the time in order to afford it, which doesn't appeal to me.  I might feel better if I marshaled my resources and got through 30 days in a row.  We'll see.

On a positive note, I got a fresh order of dates from Mecca Date Farm and love the Black Dates.  

I have also decided to not buy any more salt for our home.  My husband has agreed to this, and the kids are not really happy about it, but they still will have access to condiments that contain some salt, and they have seemed to accept it.  

Also, I have been loving my hikes at the Mississippi Palisades.  The beauty of fall almost makes up for the cold/ damp weather.  If you ever find yourself in Savannah Illinois, you have to check it out!  Click here to see awesome photos of the views.

Definitely get rid of the table salt - that'll be good for the whole family.  The salt is probably far worse for you than the cooked veggies or grains.

Try banana ice cream as a comfort food.  It means you can buy a buttload of bananas and freeze the excess ripe fruits.  It's budget friendly.

And I wholeheartedly agree with Jessica - you are STILL eating 100% better than the average North American.  It ain't perfect, but it ain't bad!

Don't beat yourself up for not being "perfect" on the 80 10 10 "RAW 100%" lifestyle. Eating salt and cooked vegan food occasionally, even regularly, is still so much healthier than how 99.99% of the world eats, especially when you are talking about within the USA particularly.

You have the ability within you to stop viewing each day as a day you weren't "perfect" on this lifestyle, and start viewing each day as a day you tried your best and made the healthiest decisions you possibly could in each moment.

And healthiest in a given situation may not always be fruit for you, since cooked food helps to numb emotional pain, and as you have written previously, you, like all humans in one way or another, have experienced some trauma as a child/young adult, and you may not be done processing that trauma yet on some level, and so you may currently need some amounts of cooked food in your diet so that you can handle the emotions you still may be experiencing. As a result, it may mean that at times that what is healthiest for you is cooked vegan food with salt in it, because your body needs that dense calorie source in order to cope with emotional pain or to simply sooth the body's craving for more dense calorie sources because it has been underfed on fresh fruit.

I think another thing to point out to you, and you probably already know this, is that almost every time you under say that you have under-eaten on fruit you end up eating cooked vegan food with/without salt shortly soon after (be it that day, or a few days later). So if your goal really is to be 100% 811 raw vegan, then you need to really focus on getting enough calories in each day of fresh fruit & green leafy veggies. Keep track of your calories and make sure you are eating at least 2500 calories from you favorite sweet juicy fruits.

I understand that this diet can be hard on the finances if you want a lot of variety and get bored of dates & bananas, but think positive that if you make "success" on this diet (whatever success may mean to you) a top priority of yours then you will find a way to allocate enough money to your food budget each month to satisfy your 811 needs.

Also, try to focus less on how much farther you have to go to be "perfect" on this lifestyle, and instead think about how far you have come since starting in 2006. And the ways in which your eating has improved since you began. Positivity attracts/breeds Positivity, Negativity attracts/breeds Negativity. 

Try to Stop viewing yourself as not having achieved your goal on this diet. That is just going to make you feel emotionally sad and as a result it will harm digestion and the body and prevent healing. Is it even possible for one to be "perfect" on a diet? What does that even mean to be "perfect" on a diet? Also, will you ever be completely satisfied with your eating habits on any diet? Would it be so bad if you just allowed yourself to stop stressing over food and just be satisfied with your current habits? ......I think these are important questions for anyone to ask themselves. I don't say these things to deter you in any way from your 811 raw goals, I just think it is really unhealthy to be really stressed out over food or anything for that matter, and that if you could accept in heart that it is perfectly okay for you to eat cooked salted whole plant vegan food you would be doing better for your health than continuously stressing out about eating the cooked food and feeling like failing every time you eat those "forbidden" foods. 

I hope my comments can be helpful to you, and I hope I didn't overstep a boundary with my suggestions in any way. If so I apologize. Just trying to help out a fellow human. Your blogs reveal your commitment to your physical and emotional health, and it has really inspired me. Thank you for sharing.
