I just experienced my first "bonk."
I was doing a 2hr bike ride where I burned just over 1,000 calories, then got a phone call from a friend who wanted to swim across a lake (30-35min swim there n back). So, bein the keener I am, I told him I'd be ready to go in 10 minutes.
Between getting off the bike and getting into the lake, I only ate like 3 dates and a banana...
When we swam across the lake, I felt OK, but I a little thirsty. My friend decided he'd walk back around and try to beat me as I swam...
During the second half of the swim, on the way back to the beach, I realized my HR monitor sensor fell off when I dove back in! I was sad for a second, then got over it.
But moments after "getting over it" I experienced dizziness which was soon followed by me not being able to breath properly and having to resort to the breaststroke. I then proceeded to get the shivers and get really cold. I kept telling myself "come on don't stop, it's all in your head, keep swimming!" But it was no use...I was so cold and dizzy that I swam over to these 2 girls that I thankfully saw floating on a little floaty boat and ended up climbing aboard. They offered me their booze, which I rejected :)
I was shivering and chattering my teeth like a maniac, and I felt awful. I was sick to my stomach even. I couldn't even talk properly I was slurring my words.
When I finally got back to the beach, I was so happy to be back on land I couldn't stop laughing and smiling, I was almost hysterical! A little boy who was eating a chocolate chip cookie started talking to me and told me he liked the floaty I just got off of. I was so drained at this point that I was actually tempted to ask him for his cookie! I probably would have if I didn't see so many chocolate chips in it and if I didn't have 2 bananas waiting for me under my towel. It was the first serious craving I've had in a looong time.
- Don't wear your HR monitor while swimming in the ocean or lake unless you're wearing a wetsuit.
- Don't work up a sweat without fuelin' up like a jet.
- Always bring bananas with you no matter where you go.
Oh, and my HR stats on first half of the swim: I burned 170 calories in 15 minutes. Max HR was 158, avg was 151...R.I.P. Polar HR sensor #1
