Seems that biotin deficiency is a major cause of dandruff in some people. I, I fear, just might be one of those people.
Some of the folks here on 30BAD know that I have struggled with pretty infuriating dandruff and dry, itchy scalp since adopting this lifestyle about 9 months ago. I mean, I'll go about a day without showering which is NOT a long time for me, considering I dislike showering, and my scalp will be positively festering with horrible, itchy flakes that fall all over my shoulders and back as I itch. The only cure at this point has been to shower, use (vegan) shampoo and conditioners, and wait till the itch returns in about 36 hours.
And this is still after having increased calories to over 3000 per day, increased exercise (see me on Strava "Athena V"), and am nearing 4 liters of filtered water per day.
I was starting to get pretty freaked out, and did not want to use standard anti-dandruff shampoo. So, I logged onto Cronomter and I noticed I have been constantly lacking in biotin. This is very strange to me, as I eat such a great quantity of fruits and veggies that it seems impossible that I would have a lack of biotin. Then I realized that Cronometer doesn't seem to catch biotin in any food products....I even typed in horrible animal parts like liver and fish oils just to see if biotin would appear, but nope.
But still--even though Cronometer might have some programming issues, I started looking into biotin deficiency. And bam! Dandruff, eczema, flaky, itchy skin--all of which I have developed--can be symptoms of a deeper issue like biotin deficiency.
Biotin is something that the human body can and should produce in the digestive tract. However, not everyone has the ability to do so.
And it doesn't mean my diet is the issue--it means that my body might not be producing enough biotin due to my past digestive/health defects and now that I am starting to heal and recover, my body is letting me know that something is still missing. So, I am going to start supplementing with a vegan biotin vitamin and see how that helps.
I am so excited to think that I might have found my answer to this obnoxious affliction, and can't wait to keep everyone apprised. It's like, the one health issue that is really bothering me. I am not as bothered by my 15-pound weight gain as I am by this dandruff and itchy, flaky scalp!!
Wish me luck------>
