30 Bananas a Day!

I volunteer at a homeless shelter for young adults. Last shift, I had kitchen duty. A guy came up and asked if we had anything vegan, and I got really excited and talked to him for a while about the diet. Nothing that was out was vegan, but we found some old couscous in the back for him. He said he wants to be an artist and he thinks that going vegan will give him the clarity of mind and spirit to produce better work.

Meeting him has made me rethink some things. Namely, if I was homeless would I have the commitment to stick to being vegan? I'm sure it must be incredibly hard, but he's been doing it for a year and looks great. It makes me realize how stupid some of my excuses have been.

Also, I think someone needs to start a non-profit that donates HEALTHY options to soup kitchens and shelters. I wonder if it would help some people get off the streets just due to better health and functioning.

So what is YOUR reason for not sticking to your diet?

being vegan/eating a fruit based diet when you're homeless is easy as. as long as you have a stable income and a friend willing to let you keep clothes/fruit at their place and are able to come and go....youre gravy. I was homeless for 3 weeks, had a stable place to live for a month, now back homeless. working at a solar energy company during this time. there's no way I can continue spending $700-$1000 a month on fruit AND have a place. right now its either use the majority of my cash for a stable home and eat shit food or feast like a king and be homeless. health>everything else.

I'm homeless currently and its not been the easiest but its doable. I am working full time now so I will have a place very soon. Looking forward to a box of bananas dates and mangos!

I'm actually enrolled in a non-profit board-of-director training program at the moment.  I already work in non-profit management as a day job, but I have a lot to learn about fundraising and building new programs.  So I'm hoping this training will help inspire me, and maybe I can get a healthy eating program started.  Thanks for the support guys!

Well kudos to both of you.  You for volunteering, and he, in spite of his situation, not being shy to speak up and ask.

I second what Jon says. Actually, a lot of stores throw out second rate produce that is still edible, and some restaurants and cafes might have veg and or vegan fare too to donate.

There are a few groups that do stuff like that.  Either the store will send the items over, or the shelter could send out a truck or van to pick things up.

Just ideas.  You know your locality and can come up with the logistics.

Peace, PK

I immediately wanted to tear up when I read that part.  Very touching indeed.

Amazing, I would be so excited if I met someone like that and got to serve them. My reason is mainly ethical veganism but high carb raw vegan for overall health, feeling like a queen rather than a dumpster, clarity of mind, fitness, confidence and independence.
