New to Buffalo & Raw Foods

Hey guys!I recently moved to Buffalo, NY, and I was wondering if there were more vegans (raw and not) in the area looking to make friends. I've been a mostly plant-based vegan for 2 1/2 years, and I'm currently trying to get more into the LFRV lifestyle. From what I've seen Buffalo seems pretty vegan-friendly, and I've been to a potluck with the Buffalo Live-Food Community from Meetup, but other than that, I'm not really sure how to branch further into the community. If anyone has any tips on…See More

To understand what brought me to 30BaD, I feel like I need to backtrack quite a bit. Growing up in the southern-midwest, a hybrid name I've grown accustom to using when describing Oklahoma, would be tough for any child trying to navigate a solid pathway to quality health and nutrition. For me, it was a nightmare! In school, I wasn't what one would consider "popular," so I would come home day after day only to fill my face with whatever sugary, processed snack or food I could get my hands on. This eventually led to me being severely overweight for my age and height while everyone else entered and exited puberty with a seemingly high amount of grace. Over the years, my mother had been on several diets, most of which were fads promising their readers/followers to be the next big solution. I, of course, saw this and made quite a few failed attempts on my own, but nothing really ever stuck except than the pounds to my waistline. Eventually fed up and dealing with depression stemming from this and a few other issues I was experiencing, I chose to put my vanity over my health and begin down a path that would take me a very long time to find my way back from. I'll save you from the not-so-pretty details, but I began doing whatever I could, going to unhealthy extremes, to achieve what I thought was the "perfect body." Not too soon after that, I developed an eating disorder. One could argue that my childhood overeating was one too, but this was different. This was conscious. I knew it was bad for me, killing me even, and I didn't care because I was getting results... and fast! This continued for several years, even into college, with my weight constantly fluctuating in major increments. At this point, I wanted to stop, but I didn't know how. This was the only way I knew how to think about food. It was an enemy and a forbidden lover simultaneously. I could have my cake and eat it too, as long as I got rid of it afterwards. If I didn't, I would get fat, and no one would ever love me. Sounds crazy, right? Extreme? Yeah, it was hell! All that time I spent trying to be thin so that I could be happy, and I was miserable!
Luckily, my junior year of college I found my way to a therapist specialized in patients with EDs, and I finally had some hope. It took a lot of work and quite a bit of time, but we were finally able to somewhat overcome my battle with food and my inner self. While in treatment, I began reading and researching the vegan lifestyle as a way to help some of my issues, and I was really amazed with what it had to offer. I could heal my relationship with food AND save the animals? SIGN ME UP! My therapist was understandably hesitant at first because it seemed like another way to restrict myself, but I assured her I would be fine. In SO many ways this felt like a last resort, and I was desperate to make it work.
First, I didn't eat meat for two weeks, and I felt incredible afterwards. Next, I did a 10-day raw juice cleanse, and I was hooked! After that, I knew the vegan lifestyle was the lifestyle for me! I wish I could tell you that all of my food issues instantly disappeared and I've never looked back, but that's not usually how EDs work.
However, I DO feel like a completely different person! Each and every day is an opportunity to heal my friendship with food and give my body what it truly needs to thrive, which is precisely what brought me to 30BaD. Going further into the vegan community, I've been learning about the raw vegan movement, and I find it fascinating! While I was on youtube, I came across Harley and Freelee's videos and heard about their community, which is something I really lack. I have a few vegan friends (raw and not), but I would love to see that number grow. If there's one thing I've learned about this lifestyle, it's that support is key!
