Hey Pauline,

I absolutely do not think that you should be consuming an exclusively no overts diet. It is possible to meet nutrient needs without them, but it does require you to make sure you are getting enough omega 3 and 6 consistently. Even then, I still think its worthwhile to include overts in the diet occasionally. Do you use CRON-o-meter? Do you know if you are regularly getting enough omega 3 and 6 (ie. at least 1.1g omega 3 and 2.2g omega 6 for a female?)? I personally would make sure you are getting enough of these, AND consume small amounts of fat regularly.

Aside from omega 3 and 6, although other fats are not technically essential, some muscle tissues can use small amounts of fat for fuel. Some overt fats can be slightly higher in protein too than other fruits.

Just to check, are you eating enough calories? any idea what a typical days protein intake looks like Are you losing weight as well as experiencing muscle weakness and fatigue?

Take care

I did a test called the Comprehensive Digestive Stool Analysis (CDSA) and it was done by a general practitioner who has a holistic orientation. The company that does the test is called Genova Diagnostics. If you add a .com to the company name you can find them on the internet. The test diagnoses many different things including yeast, bacteria, parasites, pancreatic function, immune function, ph, food allergies, etc. I don't know if it is available in Canada but I don't see why not. It was helpful in pinpointing my exact problems. My doctor doesn't know I'm doing 811. Even tho she is holistic she wouldn't understand/approve. So, she has prescribed different medications and told me to take certain supplements. I'm not doing any of that, of course. I just go see her so I can get the test done and monitor my improvement. I've never seen a naturopath, but I've heard they perform these kinds of tests. That's great that you were able to spend some time in the Caribbean. I used to take vacations to various islands and even lived on a sailboat there for about 6 months. I haven't been there in about 10 years, tho my husband and I took a vacation to Panama about three years ago. I'd love to be able to afford to live in a tropical place during the winter. I don't enjoy cold weather. Glad to hear your Vitamin D level is up. I just got mine tested recently and it's well in the normal range using the Vitamin D lamp. I'm looking forward to getting my Vitamin D the natural way--the sun! Take care, Johanna

Yes, I agree about the overts. I just read a response from Dr. Graham to someone on vegsource that overts are not required. I've not heard him say that before. I'm not going to worry about it for now. I agree that my body knows best and will tell me when I can add them back. I forgot to tell you in my post that when I was retested this past January and the amount of candida and the # of strains had decreased. And, remember I wasn't 100% but I still improved. I will redo the test in July and hopefully it will all be gone. Have you been tested for candida? What do the tests show? I'm glad spring is here too. It is going to be 70 degrees and Sunny here in Maryland today. Just the warmer weather and sunshine make me feel healthier. All the best to you--Johanna

Hi Pauline,
Thanks for the reply. I do visit rawfoodexplained from time to time. It is a very good resource. Wow--sounds like you've had a lot to deal with too. All of this makes me appreciate the fragility but also the strength of my body. For many years, I ate and drank whatever I wanted so I guess eventually it was going to catch up with me. I'm just glad it wasn't a more serious problem. I feel pretty confident that I can regain complete health with this lifestyle. In the beginning, it was tough to stay 100% but now that I see the great benefit and also the dire consequences if I don't, it feels a bit easier. I am fairly active too and have never been overweight. I am about 5'8.5 and not quite 120 pounds. Like you, I struggle to keep my weight up. I have to enter my calories in fitday every day to make sure I am getting close to 3000. I would love to gain 5-10 pounds. I'm hoping that will happen as I become healthier. I lift weights, do yoga, rebound, walk and sometimes hill sprint for exercise. I do alot of gardening and love being outdoors.

I worry about not eating overt fats but am going to leave them out of my diet until I have been symptom free for a few months. Haven't gotten there yet, but hopefully soon. Thanks for sharing how you are trying to reintroduce them. Have you tried just avocado? I'm wondering if it would be easier to digest than the brazil nuts. I tried eating just two brazil nuts a day last fall (wanted the selenium) and had trouble. Since then I've pretty much stayed away from overt fats. I also have trouble eating dates and apples. I have alot of food sensitivities which restricts my diet even more. I love celery but it doesn't love me. I'm hoping as my gut heals, those sensitivities will go away.

I wish you the best of luck with your health. Please let me know how you are doing. I was getting a little discouraged hearing people's stories of quick healing from candida. I guess some of us take longer.

Hi Pauline,
Thanks so much. I have some questions but I'll first give you a little bit of background on me and my health. I am 46 years old and was diagnosed with intestinal dysbiosis (candida overgrowth) about 5 years ago. I had been having mild symptoms for many years but they became much worse after having the Hepatitis B vaccine in 2001. My symptoms have included arthritis, rosacea, bacterial vaginosis, sciaticia, an itchy rash on one foot, acid reflux, indigestion, styes, fatigue, PMS, burning after bm, multiple food allergies, swelling in the ears. I have done two long fasts which improved or eliminated some symptoms. The fasts were followed by eating high fat raw or cooked vegan. I no longer have arthritis, fatigue, PMS, or swelling in ears. Since I started 811 last July, the other symptoms seem to improve as long as I am 100% strict and eat no overt fats. I was strict for about the first 3 months and then added some fat and symptoms returned. The following month, around the holidays, I lapsed a few times on cooked food and symptoms became worse. I am undergoing fertility treatment and when I took the medication in January my symptoms really flared up. I have been strict with the diet for the past 2 months and the symptoms now seem to be calming down again.

Tests show that my pancreas is underfunctioning which I suspect is one reason my intestinal flora is out of balance and so hard to get back in balance. Have you had any tests done that measure pancreatic functioning? I think I read that you have been doing 811 for 1 1/2 years but are still having candida issues. Is that right? Have you been 100% with the diet or have you eaten any cooked food during that time? How about overt fats? Also, I think I read that you take Vitamin D. Is that D3 and how does it affect you? I ask because when I tried to take it my candida symptoms flared. Sorry this is so long, but any insights would be most helpful. Thanks so much--Johanna

Hi Mica,
Sorry, My computer acted up and I sent you a very very "small" message. Thanks for your information. Actually this morning I did try tangerines and so far so good. Time will tell. I think a 80 10 10 Nova Scotia fruit party sounds just great to me. It's amazing, I still can't beleive it! I did really meet another 80 10 10 person. It must be amazing to have found this at such a young age, enjoy it. Pauline
