Hello all! My name is Natalie :) I'm a 20 year old university student from Hamilton, ON, Canada. I'm a longtime dedicated plant-based vegetarian and am finally ready to make the switch to veganism for health, longevity, vitality, for animals and to spread good karma! I am so thankful to have tripped across the lovely people that are you, the 30BAD community! Everyone has a story, and mine begins ten years ago when I suffered acute illness and was ***misdiagnosed*** at age 10 with Anorexia Nervosa. My mental clarity was gone, almost every food I ate left me unsettled, bloated and sick to my stomach and the weight just kept coming off. I was unable to eat all the foods that I once loved as a child because they made me physically ill - and the egotistical doctors told me that I was just a preteen trying to lose weight to fit into a cultural ideal. I was treated in various inpatient and outpatient eating disorders programs for years all without anyone looking into the root of my physical distress. Thankfully,after quickly realizing that we were getting nowhere with the docs' egos in the way and blinders on their eyes, my mom pursued a Naturopathic Doctor whom fostered a relationship with me and began the long road to helping my body to heal itself. As a ten-year-old, I became immersed in natural and alternative health, a plant-based lifestyle and traditional healing. Despite my best efforts and my desire to pursue a career in natural health, after years of being wrongfully treated and forced to gain an unhealthy amount of weight off of a standard American diet of over 3750+ calories and strict bedrest (as per the Doctor's orders in a four-month stint at an inpatient program in which my rights were taken away and I was forced to 'complete treatment'), my mental health and stamina was put to the test when I developed an unhealthy relationship with food. My body had been so deprived of vital nutrients for so long and had been made to feel unhealthy and stupid by MDs that my brain could not focus on any minute tasks. I was going against my own principles and my values, eating fat and sugar-laden foods with zero nutritional value in such high quantities because my body 'craved them'. They would subsequently make me sick due to what I now knew was a dysfunctional gallbladder, a congested liver and a slew of food sensitivities. I knew all along that my body wasn't craving these unhealthy foods, but rather the vitamins it had been starved of for so many years. And so began a new leg of my journey. I am now living my life the way I want. I still have nightmares of the indignities I was put through as a 'mental health patient', but I can let them go because I know that was a part of the grand scheme that led me to find all of you lovely mangoes! I'm ready to delve into this lifestyle full-force, and am just looking to be a part of a community where I am supported and can share my passion while learning more about veganism, the 30BAD principles and other's experiences! :)

My favourite books/movies/authors/pastimes are....
Running is something I've always loved and am fully getting back into now that my health and vitality is returning! I love doing anything outdoorsy - camping, hiking, biking, rollerblading, canoeing, geocaching...literally anything outdoors! As for reading, I'm pretty open minded. Diana Gabaldon (Outlander series), Dan Brown (DaVinci Code, Angels and Demons), Dr. Natasha Turner (The Hormone Diet, The Supercharged Hormone Diet and the Carb Sensitivity Program) and Alan Doyle (Autobiography) are some of my faves at the moment, but my go to is literally anything about natural or alternative health, new or old! My go to movie series is (DON'T JUDGE!) The Hangover trilogy, 21 and 22 Jump street, Neighbours, anything horror and I'm not a huge fan of chick flicks...unless a friend is going through a breakup and we need a vegan-friendly girls' night in :) Before movies and books, though, I'd say I'm a huge music junkie. Great Big Sea is my number one, but now that the band has gone their separate ways, I love the music of past members Sean McCann and Alan Doyle. Another favorite is another Newfie band, Fortunate Ones. Lovely people make lovely music. The Arkells are a hometown favorite (HAMILTON REPRESENT) as well as Cali band Grouplove, Surfer Blood, Lord Huron and Hawksley Workman. BUT I also love Drake and my guilty pleasure is meaningless pop (Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj all da waaay). Being Croatian, I love anything from the Balkans, especially Serbian rap and club mixes. I realize now that's a pretty random collection...Music for each of the 50 shades of Natalie ;)
