I have suffered from health problems my whole life. I was throwing up every week, always having trouble digesting foods. I saw a lot of different specialists and by the end of high school I was taking muscle relaxers every 8 hours to keep my stomach from destroying me with pain. I was always naturally skinny growing up until I hit my freshmen year of college. I gained weight out of nowhere. I did everything to try to get back to how I was. I started exercising more frequently and eating what i thought was a balanced diet at the time. I came home that summer and a good friend of mine who had been vegan for years told me about the raw food lifestyle and that i should read the china study. I read it, and decided on a camping trip that i would load up on fruits n veggies and went vegan overnight. I have never looked back. I have been a vegan for 6 years now. It cured all my stomach problems and the bad acne I had since 6th grade. I also developed a binge eating disorder my freshmen year as and gained 20 lbs on my petite frame. I spiraled into deep depression, although I had been depressed most of life. I had to be put on anti-depressants but later did EFT (emotional freedom technique) therapy which is the only thing that helped cure me of my depressive binge habits. Then in 2009 my younger brother was diagnosed with AML leukemia at the age of 19. Its the most aggressive leukemia you can have and its rare in general but even more rare for anyone under 60 to have it. Since he wasnt a minor my parents couldnt control the treatment he received and the doctors scared him into needing chemo. I strongly objected and voiced my concern frequently. Through my nagging, we put my brother on a vegan diet and within a month he was out of the hospital. Unfortunately he went to recover with my dad who let him eat whatever he wanted, saying any calories would be good calories (my brother was 6' 1" and had dropped to 115 lbs during chemo) I was away at school and couldnt monitor his eating so in less than a month of getting out of the hospital he was right back in, even worse than before. They induced him into a medical coma because he was in so much pain from all the shit they had him on. When i flew back to see my brother at this stage i didnt even recognize him. He was a bloated and yellow (his kidneys were failing and his body had jaundice) shell of his former self. I watched his heart give out right in front of me and saw him die while I held his hand. I dont want something this tragic to happen to anyone else. I am 100% convinced the medical community and bad diet killed my baby brother. Now I take extra good care of myself and am coming back full circle to the raw lifestyle that first got me into being vegan. I believe low fat, high carb is the way to go and nothing matches how good i feel when I follow this lifestyle.

i love to eat, i love to grocery shop, i love being with my family and will do anything to help support them. I love being outside, hiking in the sun, laying around on the beach, taking leisurely bike rides everywhere. I love doing physical adventures with my partner Mikey. I love traveling to new places and seeing how other cultures interact with the world. I love to read and educate myself. I am always open to new ideas but at the same time remain skeptical and discerning about what people are promoting. I love being a vegan role model. I am VERY PASSIONATE about sustainability!! I majored in sustainable living. I love to compost, and i specialize in microscopy consulting for biological correct composting. I love growing my own food and the best time of my life was doing an internship at the Rodale organic research farm, the birthplace of the organic movement (other than mother nature) I just want to be the best possible version of myself.

I want to know how to get variety into my diet. I know this is gonna be a gasping statement but I dont really like bananas. I mean I LOVE fruit but bananas taste pretty bad to me. Yes I make sure the are ripe, spotty and all, and I have had different varieties but pretty much all of them taste gross to me. I would like to know another staple supplement that could match bananas. Also how often to do you eat your protein and fats. did u have a lil bit at the end of the day, do u have your fatty meal once a month. Do you rarely eat greens or do you always have them as you last meal, how do u know how often you need to eat them, etc.

Hi,

Welcome aboard! :)

You can check out the Banana Welcome Wagon at:

http://www.30bananasaday.com/profiles/blogs/30bad-banana-wagon-tour

To get started. Be sure to note food, calorie, water, sleep recommendations and log (can use www.cronometer.com or similar)  your food/drink intake, at least for the first few months to get used to what you need to eat to stay on target calorie wise as well as macronutrient (carbs:fat:protein) wise. Even if someone is a long time, established, raw vegan, it is possible to discover some things using "hard-data"; spot trends, be able to make good adjustments, that might not be possible otherwise.

Enjoy!

P.S. Wow, you have been through the wringer, my heart broke for you, reading of your brother, I am so sorry that happened and so glad you were able to be with him at the last, although it must have been terribly painful. I am so glad that you have been able to realize what a powerful thing eating naturally can be!
