i've been interested in nutrition since around 2011. before that i exercised quite a bit since high school, and also experimented loosely with different diets, as well as calorie restriction and counting calories. i got to my lowest weight of my adult life through calorie restriction (118 lbs, at 5'2" i am currently about 130 lbs) but it always came back within a few months, given i was still eating meat and dairy and i often binge drank (and still do on occasion. i need strategies to help with that!). thankfully i've never had bullemia or anorexia, though my weight and how i look is constantly on my mind and has been for as long as i can remember (perhaps that is anorexia?).
i started experimenting with veganism in 2010, because i lived in a punk house and had some friends in college who were vegan. after graduating college in 2010, i had a lot of time on my hands, and soon found myself constantly researching veganism online. some of my first heroes were brendan brazier and dr. john mcdougall, them being the first people that i was exposed to that were promoting veganism, and their arguments were the some of the most compelling i'd ever heard (mcdougall with the career's worth of medical research and brazier with the first-hand training experience). sometime in 2012 i started watching durianrider's videos on youtube, and started watching freelee's maybe 6 months ago. i was skeptical at first - i had never heard of anything like raw veganism before - but i kept watching out of curiosity. slowly the things that DR and F would talk about started to make sense, and most of my questions and criticisms waned. only this year have i been following the dietary advice (i tend to absorb info for a long while after i finally take the plunge with new things), and though i haven't noticed many changes in regards to my weight or body fat, i do love the increased speed of digestion, ease of bowel movements - i've had issued with constipation and even anal fissures this year - and the feeling of lightness and increased energy. i also followed your advice on quitting coffee, something i did about a year ago now, and that has made me feel fantastic. i am still mainly interested in veganism, and HC veganism, for weight loss, but i think that is just my decades long love-hate relationship with my body rearing it's ugly head. i hope, once i obtain a healthier relationship with food and my body, that all of this anxiety and self-consciousness will begin to fall away.
thanks for all that you do DF and F, i believe you are truly changing the world.
