30 Bananas a Day!

Believe it or not this box of papayas was thrown into a supermarket's dumpster.
They are in perfect shape and close to being fully ripe.
The majority of customers just don't realise when many fruits are ripe and wouldn't buy these because they have a few blemishes which doesn't in any way affect the taste.
The supermarket probably thought they couldn't sell these, or maybe they just got a new load in so they had to make shelf space.
Whatever the reason I'm not complaining!

Hi Katharina,

Much of the time the dumpsters are located behind the supermarket - not all though.

The dumpsters I regularly visit with a partner are easily accessible and are unlocked. There are dumpsters around that we used to visit and are now locked - bummer!

I always visit these sites in the early hours of the morning when no one is around. I avoid drawing attention to my activities.

By the way I used to live in Bratislava (and before that in Prague) so I have visited Vienna quite a few times. Actually my original home town is Ceske Budejovice which is about 30km from the Austrian border.

I realy need to start dumpster diving behind our local bulk produce shop, as well as the local grocery stores.

Are the garbage bins of the supermarkets locked up or just standing behind the buildings ?

Barbara D,

I have particular dumpsters that I visit on a regular basis. Often you have to rummage through a dumpster as stuff is emptied into the dumpster over the course of days. You will often find goodies in the lower part of the dumpster. Surprisingly much of the F&V is still in good shape in spite of being covered in trash - usually plastic trash bags.

Luckily these papayas were still in the box as pictured and not turned upside down. It's almost as if someone took care to place it carefully in the dumpster. They were covered by some plastic bags but weren't damaged in any way.

Papayas, oh god I miss good papayas! Great catch, what a feast!

How did you find them? Did you just walk by and saw them or did you actually go to the back of the store and picked them?

Great catch Peter,
Yeah it's strange that the supermarkets want to throw out the ripe fruits instead of giving them to people. Monetary system sucks. But it's kool that you are able to take advantage of the possibility.
