Wow, that's a good price for papayas. The price here is a dollar something a pound at the cheapest place in my city that I know of.
What an awesome surprise that papaya tree must have been when you found it growing. ;o)
Papaya, romaine and cilantro is another combination that is also really good.
Cheers to awesome papaya salads. ;o)
A few years ago whilst traveling in Malaysia we (the passengers) stopped off at a bus stop for about 15 minutes.
I walked around the complex and stumbled upon a papaya tree growing amongst dense bush. It was huge - probably ten metres high with lots a huge fruit. I tried to shake the trunk but to no avail as the trunk was just too large. I don't think anyone harvested the fruit.
Nevertheless in the F&V markets in Malaysia you can buy huge ripe papaya for about 50 cents per kg.
My papaya just sprouted from seed from compost I suspect - I didn't even plant it! Papaya doesn't like frost but luckily my papaya is protected from heat from the brick wall of the townhouse.
I like your papaya tree. That's a nice cluster of fruit. For the longest time I was having trouble finding decent sized and ripened papayas here in Ontario but recently a new "World" market opened up that is selling nice sized papayas for an ok price. They're still a bit pricey but I'm happy I have the option to buy them since they're one of my favorite fruits.
I went to Cuba last year and saw some of the biggest papaya's I've ever seen in my life. Some were as big as medium watermelons!!! I bought the biggest one I could carry back to my hotel which I had to carry like a baby it was to big... jajaja
I hope someday I get to live in a place where I can grow my own fruit like you... hopefully someday soon ;o)
I will hopefully get an opportunity to make this salad in the next year or so.
Let me explain; I live in a townhouse with limited room to grow fruits and veg but I have a papaya tree that has given plenty of fruit over the past three years. Over a year ago I planted cuttings from a dragon fruit. These are growing well but no sign yet of fruit. I obtained the cuttings from my father's dragon fruit which has been giving fruit for a few years.
Finally I grow herbs in pots. among them parsley.
Here is a picture of my papaya;
