How can I make that fruit ripen? Do all fruit ripen once cut off from their tree?

Part of the success on the 811rv diet depends on one's fruit ripening skills. It would be great to have this group share links and info about fruit ripening techniques and any kind of advice to choose ripe fruits, etc.

What triggered me into creating this group is that a couple weeks ago I discovered that tomatoes could go from green to red, from acid to sweet, just by themselves, after having been already picked! I did not trust the friend of mine who indicated this to me so I bought some green tomatoes, left them on my kitchen counter for a week and to my surprise they turned red and were so sweet and delicious. I had always thought tomatoes could only ripen before being picked.

Hi Danielle-

Here's what I've observed:

To speed up ripening, put them in a bag, or cover them up somehow. even sticking them in a cabinet seems to make a difference.

To slow down ripening: store in the fridge.

And, don't despair if some of them don't ever seem to ripen fully. Bananas travel a long way, are picked green, often gassed (?!?!?)... so some of them give up before they reach their full potential.

Hope this helps!

I know! I'll try to take a picture of these tomatoes next time I have some... I am not sure this applies to all types for sure. I have a problem though: it looks like it was the end of the season and this week the fruit/veggie store did not have them anymore...

I would say that you have to put them in a warm room to make them ripen faster. That's my understanding about banana ripening: the warmer, the faster it ripens. Just make sure you don't put them all in the same spot as otherwise you'll have to drink smoothies for 3 or 4 days to avoid wasting them ;)
