Started by Jem. Last reply by Rawlicious Nurse Jul 29, 2012. 15 Replies

It seems hard for me to fill my calorie quota of the day. I was thinking that eating 1/2 of my calories from medjool dates could help since they are more compact. But is that not healthy to eat so many everyday since they have a lot of sugar? Or…Continue

Yeahr you need a big spread of fruit on the go, more then you need, I'm still struggling with this, you can never have too much variety around you, especially all your favorites for the season your in, this makes it a joy and not a chore to stay raw . you need a back up for the days where your fruit just don't go right/to plan e.g. i have had a bad few days this week where i didn't have the cash to get more fruit and everything i went to eat wasn't ripe or it was bad :( and that is not good to stay raw cos you under eat, feel week, confused and easy for cravings to take over(this gets worse as the days go on you are low on fruit). so my back up was again Dates.

From wikipedia 'Melatonin':
All machinery for melatonin synthesis has been identified in skin cells and both melatonin and its byproduct, N1 -acetyl-N2 -formyl-5 -methoxykynuramine (AFMK), have been found. Both of these molecules are naturally synthesized from the amino acid tryptophan (via synthesis of serotonin). Serotonin is converted to melatonin by the enzymes N-acetyltransferase and 5-hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase.

So it seems the body needs tryptophan to produce melatonin (regulates sleep/wake cycles). So if you undereat in terms of carbohydrates, your body is going to convert dietary amino acids, including tryptophan, into sugar to fuel the cells. Not enough calories from fruit, not enough tryptophan, notenough melatonin, thus difficulty in regulating sleep cycles. At least that would be part of it.

Bananas have loads of tryptophan incidentally Sita. :)

Insomnia-undereating fruit? Since I eat mainly bananas I need less and less sleep.....+can work out more. But in the healing process maybe shouldn't jump to conclusions. Anyway, adding more fruits surely speeded healing up, took away cravings for cooked, but now I have to find a way to get fresh greens in as soon as they are digestible.

I'd like to hear Adam's thoughts on the insomnia/undereating fruit connection. Apparently decreased production of the hormone leptin (which regulates appetite) and lack of sleep are associated, but the studies I'm aware of look at this from a weight loss perspective. It's not clear to me if there is a direct cause/effect relation between decreased leptin production as a result of undereating sweet fruit and difficulty sleeping, but there may be.

Hi Freelee,

Thanks for posting this.

I'm wondering what you and DR think the connection between undereating fruit and insomnia is?

I like to eat only when im hungry but i also find doing this you can get to hungry too quickly and if you don't have fruit around it can be easy for your cravingsto pop into your head and whip your mind into a frenzy for complex carbs or what ever it is you crave, and when your hungry and low on simple carbs i find i get very confused and you don't seem to think straight, then it's just to easy to eat the foods that make us sick cos when where in that state we don't think about all the unhealthy things that come with what it is we are craving. So i try to get a feel for when im near hungry and eat before it gets to late, and eat untill your not thinking about food anymore, otherwise you did not enough.
I always Carry about 10-15 dates with me so if i do run out of fruit i got a good back up

Thought it would be great to have an inspiring place to send peeps who are undereating on fruit and finding it challenging to stay raw. This diet is about abundance not deprivation, eat all the fruit you care for, guilt free!
