This morning I was eating a whole bunch of different dates, and in a Deglet Noor date i bit into, I saw black mold like in this picture: http://www.flickr.com/photos/andsometimesnatalia/3404707319/
I ate half of it before I realized, and now the outsides of my upper lip is all bumpy and a tiny bit swollen.
Any similar experiences or insights?
I've eaten through maybe 6 5kg boxes of dates from Palestine, which were pretty good, easy to eat. Out of those boxes I found 3 dates like that. The first time I had just eaten it and spit it out. Since then I bite every date open with my front teeth or rip it in half the long way with my fingers before I eat it. It's worth the effort and I pay more attention to my eating.
With all due respect to Deglet Noor lovers, ... I've never experienced a date more consistently full of non-desireables (bugs, mold, etc.) as the Deglet Noor. I just simply avoid them and take my chances with other kinds ;-)
ew bugs!!?? that's such a shame because I really like the deglet noor variety
Found bugs in a few Khadrawy dates as well! Thank you Chris for warning me so I was on the lookout.
And I had medjool dates from the grocery store a few days ago, and I had an allergic reaction again around my mouth. It was really itchy and after 3 days of that my skin became super dry.
Just odd that this alergic reaction has happened twice now. However, I am not going to stop eating amazing dates
Only in my deglet noor dates I sometimes find little spider eggs, bits of web and other weird stuff. But the medjool dates are always "clean".
oh my gosh, I have had that happen to me so many times and today I found a worm and eggs in one that I was taking a bite of! EWWW! I freaked out for a good 10 mins and then luckly found a lot of posts that said it was normal, but still gross.!
