I had requested a DEXA scan several times and my doctor finally agreed. It turns out that I have low bone mass density. I am glad that I insisted on getting the test before I had any stress or fragilty fractures.

I am not recomending that anyone do what I do.

My "25-OH total" is 26 ng/mL.  I am taking a daily total supplementation of 2900 IU of D3 Cholecalciferol with a "25-OH total" goal of 50 ng/mL. I will be tested again in May.

I am out in the sun quite a bit, and I prefer to take a supplement rather than to depend on artificial sun-light.

Again, I am not suggesting that anyone do what I do.

Not necessarily my opinion, but for what it's worth:

A low vitamin D level can be diagnosed with a blood test called 25 hydroxyvitamin D or 25OHD (OH=hydroxy, D=vitamin D). Although there is no formal definition of vitamin D deficiency, some groups use the following values in adults:

  • A normal level of vitamin D is defined as a 25OHD concentration greater than 30 ng/mL (75 nmol/L).
  • Vitamin D insufficiency is defined as a 25OHD concentration of 20 to 30 ng/mL (50 to 75 nmol/L).
  • Vitamin D deficiency is defined as a 25OHD level less than 20 ng/mL (50 nmol/L).

Liam, if only the UVC gets filtered out then yes, that could have the potential to work.
Comment by Liam G on February 27, 2011 at 7:39am

In low pressure bulbs, it is only the UVC that gets filtered out. Of course it's artificial and unnatural so I understand the corncern but I haven't heard any good reasons to beleive they could be bad bad bad. Maybe they're a little bad but so is vitamin D defficiency. That's bad bad bad.

As far as the tanning lamps go, while I'm not a fan of trying to artificially recreate something that's lacking, here's what I read on that Wiki page:

"Because UVC can be deadly, a special dichroic filter glass (usually purple) is required that will filter out the UVC and UVB. The goal with high pressure tanning bulbs is to produce a high amount of UVA only."

The UVBs are the ultraviolet waves of the correct wavelength to penetrate the skin and transform the "pre-pre" D3 to the pre D3, and then off it goes to the liver and kidneys for 2 separate hydroxylations. If you get rid of the UVB then you're not getting anything except darker skin from a tanning lamp, but I fear there may be some undesired consequences from an artificial method such as this.

People in hot countries could have low levels of D because they're using it up eating acid forming food.

I remember reading somewhere that even people in warm climates get low vit d levels because society is "cleaner" these days.  I wish I could remember where the heck I heard this!  But it had something to do with the body needing a few days to absorb the vit d that's absorbed into the oils in our skin... or something like that.  So showering every day impedes the process.  I'm gonna have to try and find out where on earth I heard that.

It'd be interesting to see the blood tests of a remote village that doesnt shower as much as we do, and how they make out with vit d

@RJ We all have the intentions of trying to help, and if I understand correctly, the molecule that is a vitamin D3 precursor in the skin is released by the skin's sebaceous glands but stays within the cell membrane's walls, so the only way you could "lose" this molecule is if dead skin or nearly dead skin shed from your body, which does occur when you wash your skin. I don't think this is much of an issue because if a skin cell is dead or near dead it's ability to produce a D3 precursor would likely be questionable. Does this make sense?
