30 Bananas a Day!

I just started unschooling/homeschooling back in march and am in my 3rd year of high school. I'm so worried about college. I want to be able to learn and do whatever I want but I keep thinking about my future. I'm teaching myself AP Chemistry and Calculus and am trying to study the ACT even though I hate all forms of exams. These three are pretty much my main areas of studies and at other times I learn whatever I feel like learning. I'd watch a documentary on evolution, astronomy, or health. I don't go to museums, though. I just feel like I have limited opportunities since I live in New York City. I'm applying for college classes (actually just one: Chemistry). But until the next academic semester, I don't know what to do that would help me enjoy life and keep me a bit busy. Any tips please?

Hi Sophia!,

I'm not an unschooler myself but the folks over at these self-directed learning organizations in Princeton and Western Mass might be able to help you gain the confidence you need to keep charting your own path: northstarteens.org and plcteens.org.

Hope this helps,

Kaitlin

Sophia, what do you mean by limited opportunities?  I'm not sure what you want an opportunity to do.  Sorry, I wanted to help but wasn't sure what your post meant.

Are you worried about getting into college, or about being in college or finacial or what?

Mary TG: Sorry for not making myself clear, but I meant that I don't have the opportunity to work in a science lab like school students. I can't find much to do here in nyc, and I can't seem to be able to find other groups of homeschooled teens that I can socialize and learn with. I'm also worried about getting into a college and choosing the right college.

Kaitlin: Thanks so much! :)

Thanks for clarifying, Sophia.  Sounds like you have a lot facing you.  Are you comfortable with going to high school just for the science labs?   Not sure how your laws read but in most states kids can attend school for "specials" like art, music, gym, computer science etc.  My 7-year-old daughter goes one morning for art and gym and my friends 13-year-old goes every morning for an 8am science class.  Might be worth checking out.

I would check online for homeschool co-ops in NYC, there's a bunch listed, maybe one would work for you?

MIT offers free curriculum for high schoolers.  I believe the guy that started Khan's Academy (free online homeschool course site, we use it for math) helped develop it. http://ocw.mit.edu/high-school/courses/

In NY, homeschoolers are not allowed to take classes or participate in sports teams and clubs, either. Not much was done in the labs of my former high school, anyways and that's about the same for every other public school here. I think I might try looking up homeschool co-ops like you suggested. Thank you so much for helping! :)

Hey there Sophia! I was home schooled from 5th grade until my senior year of high school due to health reasons. I didn't have an extremely "structured" curriculum. Like you I basically studied what I was interested in, whether it be history, science, etc. I did try to focus on Math although I hated it! I just never really "got it". I never took the S.A.T., A.C.T. or any other standardized tests until I was ready to go to college. At which point I took a College Placement Test which basically just told them what level I would be in my knowledge of General Education Classes, (Math, Reading, Logic). I placed well and from there I went on to college. It isn't as difficult as you think as long as you are putting a bit of effort into your studies. As for limited opportunities to get out there. YOU LIVE IN NYC! There are probably thousands of places you can go and study or get together with other home school students like yourself. Take a look on Google but here is a link to help get you started. Good luck!
