I'm thinking about coming to visit singapore next week to visit for a couple of days, I have a family friend who lives there currently but is moving in 2 weeks I am currently in thailand btw. I was wondering since this group isnt very active, does anyone who frequents this site still live there? If so where are some good places to get fruit or vegan food?

another aspiring raw vegan/fruitarian here.. been on a transition diet of mostly raw (2 fruit meals and 1 cooked meal in the evening)... apparently not a good idea as far as durianrider is concerned.. will see if I can be 100% raw (fruit) tomorrow..

anyone interested in starting a fruit coop?

Great suff Jayme, cheers.

Any tips, where one can find fine durians?

And there are some many different ones, which ones should I go for?

Hi Chris!

Firstly, welcome to Singapore! Even though it's just two days... Lol.

Supermarkets will be a better choice as compared to fruit and veggies from the wet market, because supermarkets/hypermarkets sell fruits at a much cheaper price. This is because they are huge, and order in very very large quantities from the suppliers. Since they are big, suppliers can afford to sell the items to them at a much cheaper price as compared to selling them to the stalls in the wet market.

I personally prefer the supermarkets, really, because the fruits are of better quality. The bananas you buy won't be ripe though, and I don't think it will ripen up in a day or two. I will recommend you to try the mangoes and papayas at Shop N Save, and yes, durians (my all-time fave!). Or you can go Giant for some pre-cut fruits. Don't go Cold Storage because the price of all their products is much higher than the rest of the supermarkets!

Hope this helped!

Hi,

Got a two day stop-over in Singapore 21st and 22nd of July and was wondering if anybody got some tips, where to find nice fruit.

..know I'll be having a heap of durian as never tried it but what else is recommended to try there?

I see from previous posts, that a good thing is hitting up huge supermarkets but what about some of the fruit/vegie markets, I find in various travel guides?  Are they around a certain area?

Thanks in advance for any in-sider tips :-)

Cheers,

Chris

It is expensive here.  I did eat cooked food yesterday but I feel okay about it.  I had two large steamed sweet potatoes which I think is really fine.  I felt really heavy and full after eating them and was thinking about what other cooked food I should try but I got right back on raw after the potatoes.

Hey Alanana,

we passed through Singapore just a few months ago. Produce was great! Check out any giant supermarket. You should be able to find all the melons, papayas, and anything else to suit your fancy. We even found 4 kinds of dates! It's spendy, but everything in Singapore is costly. And honestly, I think eating higher fat for a few days is MUCH better than stir fry over rice... stir fry is a lot of cooked oil, which means it has gone rancid, plus salt and whatever other crap they put on their stir fry. If you're starved for carbs by all means go for rice, but with the great supermarket options in Singapore you should be fine.

Welcome to Singapore! Sorry I didn't come and receive you. Which hotel are you staying at? Perhaps I can meet up with you before you head back. Indeed you can't really find ripe fruits. To many others, ripe= not good, so they buy yellow bananas and not spotty ones. In regards to dates, there isn't really a place to buy them the only place I know that sells medjools are cold storage but 330g costs 10sgd. Perhaps I can meet you on Thursday morning? Let me know. I'll message you my contact number. Hope you can enjoy!

first day in singapore was fun but a massive failure as far as diet goes - I stayed raw but I probably would have been better off with a cooked vegan stir fry over white rice.  I eat 100!!!! grams of almonds and about 6 servings of durian throughout the day - trying not to beet myself up over it....  no more fat for the week!!!!  The fruit i am finding here just isn't appealing or is unripe.  I bought a bunch of (unripe) bananas and papaya today so i should be good on thursday and friday but I am worried about tomorrow - where can one find good dates in this town!?!?!?!?
