30 Bananas a Day!

Hi everybody,

I'm 35 weeks pregnant with my 4th child. I have tried to be really healthy for most of my pregnancy, eating heaps of greens, drinking nettle tea, eating sunflower seeds, parsley, mushrooms, prunes and dates, however my last lot of blood work showed really low iron and b12. Does anybody have any ideas on how I can boost my levels? I'm taking supplements at the moment, but I'd prefer not to as the iron tablets seem to upset my digestion.

Also, if any mamma's have any tips on what I should be doing in the last few weeks to really get my body prepared for childbirth, I am all ears!

Well it depends how low your levels are and if it's affecting you. When I was 6 months pregnant with my first my ferritin (iron stores) fell to around 10. My b12 levels were also very low. My midwife said I wouldn't be able to have a home birth if I didn't get the iron up. And I felt dreadful. So I opted for supplements. I actually found one that's not too bad on your tummy, solgar's gentle iron, if you decide to go that route.
Thanks Lia, I guess I'll stick to the supplements until I get my next blood test and hope that my levels are up by then. I was surprised to find out my iron was low as I had heaps of energy but since I've started on the tablets ive been super tired. It's probably a coincidence. I will look for the iron supp you recommended though.

Blackstrap Molasses...We used to get an organic kind - Something Sweeteners?- that had all sorts of B vitamins, Iron, Magnesium, Calcium and Potassium.
