I'm traveling to israel on a birthright trip on Dec 30th. Does anyone in this community live in Israel and have suggestions on where to go to get produce? Also let me know if there are any fruitlucks happening around then, I would love to be a part of it!
So glad you decided to come to Israel. There may be other places that have more sight or attraction however there isn't any place on earth that has the special warmth or welcoming atmosphere like in Israel.
There isn't any problem getting fruit or veggies here since in every main street there is a fruit and vegetables shop. However, I recommend you to go to the market because this is another experience.
Personally, since I'm not familiar in particular with Haifa or the north, I can only tell you about Tel Aviv (although the market in Jerusalem - Machanne Yehoda is very famous and considered a very inviting place).
When you arrive to Tel Aviv go to The Carmel Market (in Hebrew it's called "Shook Ha Carmel"). If you are a fruit lover, after you get used to the noise, you are going to dig it! The abundance is addicting, the variety and the colors are overwhelming. There might be places chipper, but the prices there are affordable.
If you come on Tuesday or Friday, there is an art market in the parallel street that is called "Nahalat Binyamin".
Moreover, Do not miss a quick visit in another street there "Shenkin" there you could see many different people living together (don't know why but in the rush of the city – this is a place where I feel a sensation of slowing down and freedom. Of course you can enjoy the enormous variety of smoothies since every other shop offer you a different combination. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsFocmOzDN4
I recommend you to come and stroll there and when you had enough, buy a few kilos of your favorite fruit at the market, and walk to the beach which is 15 min walk from there and enjoy the sun. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pe0ARdU2gTk
After you carbed up, you can join the dancing there and at night you can go and dance in many clubs that the city has or to meet people in a bar. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vRmPVoZD04
I hope you are going to enjoy your stay.
