Hello Everyone! I have been eating pretty much fully raw now for a few months and this way of eating has become quite expensive. Also, I have to make so many trips to the store. I was wondering if someone knew in Chicago where I can buy fruit in bulk at a reasonable price?
I go to the Chicago International Produce Market aka the wholesale market in Chicago at 2404 S Wolcott Ave http://www.chicagoproducemarket.com/ The prices are great. I buy cases of bananas for $17 there and sometimes you can get GREAT Deals. Once I got a box of 48 Avocados for $5, granted they were ripe and ready to eat so I made a lot of guac and froze it all :)
Also check out Stanley's Fresh Fruit Vegetables at 1558 N Elston Ave, Chicago. The prices are insanely good for produce and they also offer a quality organic section. Raspberries were 98cents for 12oz and organic watermelon was 39cents a pound. Great prices.
Thanks for the info! Will definitely check these out
Hi Gabe. The Chicago International Produce Market website says it only sells to wholesalers, and it looks like there are quite a few retailers located there. Is there a retailer that sells to the public? And what days are best to go? Thanks!
Hi Meena. The website says that but I've never had an issue buying there and no one has ever asked for my tax id or anything like that. The best retailer is Panama Banana, its the first one and the largest.
I've only gone during weekdays and they close at noon so the earlier the better. I'm actually going there this Wednesday around 10am with Mike Vlasaty (www.youtube.com/user/fruitandstrength). If you want to join us, we can show you around and maybe go halvsies on a box of dates of something. Let me know
Oh awesome! I will check them out! I can't go this week, but hope to join you on a future trip! Thanks!
Hey Gabe. When are you planning on going to CIPM next? I really want to start getting into buying wholesale but I have no idea what I'm doing, so it would be really nice to get a tour from someone who does. Please let me know if you wouldn't mind helping me! Thanks!
hey, If anyone is planning a trip out there any time soon I would love to tag along, jeeze I've lived in chicago my whole life and I've never heard of this place! but I totally am feeling the fruit in my wallet. this place sounds super cool, but also rather intimidating to newbies
Would you like to go next monday? Mondays are pretty much the only days I can go. I've never been there either, so we can both be newbies lol
Stanley's always has deals but I've noticed you've got to eat the produce within a day or two, at most, of purchasing. I've bought berries that get moldy by the second day : /
And, I had no idea you could buy directly from Chicago International! Awesome!
This is awesome! I live about 1 hour and 45 minutes from Chicago, in rural Onarga. I saw that wholesaler listed on the internet too, but since it said not open to the public, I never tried it. I may just have to get up that way one of these days and give it a try! I have nothing around me at all. I drive 45 minutes every week just to go to Walmart and Aldi's for groceries, nothing organic around me. I do grow a garden with what I can. I have been dabbling in raw for a few years now and am just now trying to go 80 10 10. I bought 40 pounds of dates and froze a lot of fruit for the winter. I would appreciate any advice anyone may have! I moved from California a few years ago and the winters are challenging, especially for raw. Thanks!
Anyone want to go to CIPM soon? I need to stock up! :D
