30 Bananas a Day!

I know this isn't the usual type of post for this group but I didn't know where else to post and seeing as this group has so many members I'm hoping one of you can help.

just moved to Kolkata India. Yesterday I discovered that there's been a serious outbreak of dengue fever here. If it were just me I'd probably take my chances, but I have a 3 year old, who is getting bitten regularly in school, and a 6 month old, who gets probably one bite a week when a mossie finds its way into our bedroom. I don't really want to take any chances with them.

Can anyone suggest a viable alternative to deet products? Personally I tried many essential oil combinations that didn't work but recently I had success with soya oil and geranium oil for my little boy, great but I managed to break the geranium oil bottle. My husband will bring back some more in a few weeks but until then we only have an essential oil blend from Thailand that isn't working. I have lavender and eucalyptus oils with me so I'll try those, but can anyone give me any other ideas?

Thanks

Unfortunately I don't have the money for a vacuum cleaner at the moment, but that's a great idea, will bear that in mind for the future.

Have you tried citronella oil?  That's a pretty powerful pest deterrent.  I use it when I go camping and it works well (I tend to attract mosquitoes within a 50 mile radius usually! LOL)

Oops former got to mention I can't get any other essential oils here... Tried it myself before to no avail but haven't tried it with my son. Would, if I could get some.

There is a great natural produce available here in Hawaii called Waikoloa Bob's Hawaiian Botanical Oil, it works great here and should do in India also.Website address is www.waikoloabob.com it has canola and sunflower oil, lemon grass, tea tree, citronella, and the active ingredient is essential oil of Nepeta Cataria.

See if they will send you a bottle, it goes a long way and is really good here. If they won't send you some let me know and I'll mail a bottle to you to try.

Thanks guys I'll check those out, very useful thank you!

Long term you just have to be as healthy and fit as possible, be light! Sleep under mozzie nets, be careful during dusk and dawn etc.. Long term repellants are not sustainable or practical, and having lived in the tropics most of my life in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, you really just have to face up to the instabilities of this climate. I've had malaria around a dozen times so I know loads about mosquito parasites, the best solution is radiant light health, in body, mind and spirit.

Yep, thats the only way! Get your immunesystem strong!

Thanks that's really helpful, been thinking along those lines myself.
