Ants do not like salt. I'm just wondering if spraying a strong salt solution at places where they're coming in would help?
An easy way, assuming these are sugar-eating ants, the little black ones.
Place a saucer of any sweetener (sugar, maple syrup, etc) diluted with water where the ants are coming in. That will satisfy them, and they won't go further. I used to get seasonal ant invasions, several places I lived, and this worked well. After the season was over, I would let them finish it off, and they would go away for another year.
If they are the big red ants, mix cayenne in water and paint it onto the floor to create a barrier. They don't like walking on it.
"arbitrary supremacy line" - interesting terminology .
How about a specific barrier to detour insects with the potential to cause harm or effect health or should i open the sliding glass door when Africanized Killer Bees are swarming?
Are you suggesting i sweep away the line of Diatomaceous Earth and welcome Cockroaches inside?
Maybe it's just me but i'd rather not have Termites or Carpenter Ants destroy my family’s home.
Who wants to contract Lime Disease from a Tick ?
How about window screens or mosquito-netting as a barrier to Mosquitos carrying Malaria or West Nile Virus?
Personaly i'd prefer to not sleep with Fire Ants or Bed Bugs .
Is it ok to disrupt a Spider web forming on the headboard of an infants bed & place the Spider outside ?
i originally responceded to someone who seeking an alternative to "that evil bug spray".
Diotomatious Earth is far better way of dealing with insects.
if you put down a line of the powder, ants will stop in their path and change direction.
why are people in here afraid of open discussion ?
water kills insests by physical action. should we not water our gardens ?
(rain drowns millions of insects everyday)
(thus i rescue June Bugs & others from drowning)
Diatomaceous Earth is the microcopic fossilized remains of single cell algae, found in natural deposits throughout the crust of the earth and in marine sediments. it is what filters swimming pools. when insects come across a line of 'DE' it they change direction.
Diatomaceous Earth is NOT poison.
'DE' is fossilized single cell algae.
(see 'Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth')
inresting that DE is so upsetting to some people.
doing a google search. . .
salt kills ants, so does cayenne. just sayin'
DE does repel ants ! when they come to a line of DE they change their direction thus repeling.
natural repelents such as eucalyptus, citronella oil are repellents and biopesticides (natural poisions) when insects sence them, they leave thus repeling. when ants come to DE they leave. same action same result. what is the problem here ?
You have good common sense, and you're very kind throughout all these posts. Thank you!
I've had a lot of emails from 30BaD since giving my two cents on this. Is there a consensus? I realize that my recommendation of using honey was not vegan. Dummy me! Maybe maple syrup would work? I know that sugar will work, but I don't know if it's good for the ants. I'm still looking for a practical solution that does not involve hurting the ants, poisoning the baby and her mom, damaging the environment, etc.
Just thought I'd follow up on your ant problem. How's it going? Did anything work? I hope you and your family are fine.
