30 Bananas a Day!

I have been transitioning into HCRV for the last two weeks and am wondering about composting. This evening, I dropped 5.5 lbs of banana peels into the garbage can and thought, "There must be a better way! All these banana peels and melon rinds should not go to waste."

Can anyone advise about composting or otherwise reusing fruit and vegetable waste?

Better to keep it closer to home. Is there a community garden, near you? Someone, there, might be able to compost your left-overs.

Environmentally throwing it in the "trash" isn't a bad thing. It does seem sad to see good plant matter go to waste though.

Could you start a little garden? On your deck (if you have one) or a hydroponic one inside?

I’ve composted for years. Even before I had a garden I had my black ‘box’ outside and all my kitchen wastes went in that.

About 3 years ago I took to the back lawn with a rotary hoe and we put a large vege garden in. The ready compost came in handy. I also built a bigger compost bin – 1 meter high x 800 x 800.

Its very fullfilling to see kitchen waste (and grass clippings etc) as good dark composted matter going back into the garden.

Food waste thrown into garbage cans headed for landfill is terribly irresponsible, sorry peeps! Why not just eat McShit?

When we are eating healthy and consciously we really need to consider all aspects of our lives, not just the parts we want (Bannana's) and throwing out what we don't (the peels) without adequate care and concern. Same goes for sharing and caring for all life around us.

So if you don't want to garden, you don't have the space whatever the case maybe (blah!), the best way to turn that unwanted energy is to share it, give it to someone that would love it, give it back to life, ask your neighbors if they would like your unwanted scraps for compost for their worms ~ network, connect, and care for your neighbours and Earth that gave you the food in the first place... 

Remember also that your scraps need to be Organic so it does not pollute the Earth, Waterways, Life, if you think buying cheap monoculture chemical food is healthy and feasible then you have missed the boat, your part of the problem. Organic/biodynamic natural/cosmic food is what we need to be eating and any biproduct from those scraps is Gold to anyone that gardens :) Trust me on that!

Depending on your situation,you may be able to start a composting process and from that a garden,even an indoor garden,is that possible for you?

With fruit and vegetable leftovers you would need to mix these with a high carbon material like dry straw,along with smaller amounts of nitrogen material like fresh grass clipping,manure,etc and maybe some rock dust.You could use one of those portable compost bins or make a bin outdoors.I dont know your situation but these are a few ideas.Otherwise spread the peels under trees,etc,buy a bale of mulch to cover them in a suburban situation to deter flies and any smell,,things like that rather than throwing in the garbage.....be creative.......
