30 Bananas a Day!

I practice Ashtanga yoga and have begun working on intermediate series. Today my teacher said that I need to start eating more fats to counteract the "agitative nature" of intermediate series. He says that fats are important for lubricating the joints and sheathing the nerves.


The idea of avocados inside my elbows makes me giggle a little. But seriously, has anyone heard of this yogis-need-more-fat theory?

I've definitely heard of the you-need-fat-for-your-joints theory, but I doubt you need any more than 8/1/1 includes. I do yoga too and don't eat any extra fat.
I learned 2nd series while LFRV a few years back. It brings out alot of nervous energy, beware of that.  Some pranayama practices do the same thing.  My teacher suggested eating more fats also, which I tried, but didn't work well.  Its different for raw vegans.  I look forward to eventually having a strong raw yoga community.

Although I didn't study Ashtanga yoga, I studied under a teacher who studied Ashtanga, and he never mentioned such a thing. But to be fair he didn't really talk much about nutrition (was probably less interested in discussing the topic after training teachers for 30+ years). What he did say though was "If you want to make your stomach the graveyard for dead animals, I won't judge you." Hehehe.


Your giggles are right on. How is fat gonna lube up your joints?

Just go to class next time with avocados taped to your elbows and knees. ;)


I know 811 yoga instructors and I know cocaine snorting bulimic yoga instructors. They both have similar bodies but guess which ones are more fun to be around. :)

I do Ashtanga yoga too and the intermediate series is crazy and so cool all at the same time:) I Love this yoga! I don't even think I have appropriate advise for a yoga TEACHER ;) but I must say I believe that you'll get through the agitation eventually, intake of fat might temporarily ease it, but Always Do What Feels GREAT!!!  Does your yoga teacher eat 811? Mine don't and they say the darndest things to me.."Can't eat raw in this yoga!" LOL I love it cause they're happy eating meat and I'm happy LFRV!! You rock sister, try it out just for giggles ;) Aloha

No, my yoga teacher is a pretty far cry from 811 - every morning he eats a pastry! But I have recently converted him and his wife to veganism, so its a step :)


I feel like my diet is the reason that I have progressed so quickly in this practice. I feel great and generally have a great practice! Funny enough I have been eating more avocados this week, and I have experienced some big changes, especially openings in my hamstrings. I'm not sure if that's due to avocados, or that I had a really great talk with a friend on Monday and have been focusing really well.





If there is any advise you would like to share I'm all ears and heart! I wish you were my 811 yoga teacher :) I might try avo's too just to loosen up a bit more ;)
The most important thing for yoga is to avoid salt. Salt makes me sooo stiff! Even the little bit of salt on seaweed. So If I'm going to eat seaweed I'll try to do it on Friday, since Saturday is a rest day. It's interesting that there it is generally recognized in the yoga community that salt is a deterrent to good practice - yet yogis still allow some salt in their diet, eating processed and cooked food!
Awesome advise! I've never heard that one and it seems VERY imoportant!!!
Most yogis are as confused as deluded about diet as hippies.

I think I know your Yoga teacher actually. We practiced together in India.
I know this practice and also why you were told what you were told about the fats. However, it is not actually a "Yogis-need-more-fats" theory, this indication is that you may need more fats at this time, while your body is deeply cleansing it's nervous system. Someone else on this thread made mention of the same indication for Pranayama practice. Again the indication is for the commencement of the practice only, while it is new and the body is adjusting.

Super interesting thread.  In the process of finding a yoga teacher training immersion retreat where it's not too hard to eat low-fat raw vegan myself.
