30 Bananas a Day!

This answer has baffled me for years. Even keeping fat intake under 5% to 10% for years, oats and potatoes put INSTANT pounds on me. I just don't get it. I can eat yams and sweet potatoes without this problem, even rice, and bread! But JUST oats and potatoes do it. And before any smart aleck asks me WHAT I put ON my oats and potatoes, NOTHING. That's the point of my question. No sugar, salt, spices, fats, or anything. Just plain boiled... or baked...

Anyone have an idea why this happens?

Could be possible you have a sensitivity to nightshade vegetables?? If i ever eat potatoes or tomatoes i swell up like crazy especially around my stomach :( fluid retention/swelling can make you feel a million kilos heavyer!!!

Hi Brandy! That would be a possibility, but I do not have a sensitivity to other nightshades at all.

I recall Tim van Orden has some explanations that might relate to this. My memory brings to my mind some video footage about experimenting with feeding animals cooked vs. raw potatoes and how the cooked ones fattened them whereas the raw didn't. I don't remember the details, but you might find something in one or more video(s) TVO has made.

Thanks Eric :)

Just this weekend I heard a concept as I never had before, which I'll share adapted to our knowledge of digest and assimilation.

We know that fresh fruits n veg are prime, and indeed the ideal diet, provided you can eat enough of them.

So why do the next best thing, the starches you describe and still very good choices in themselves, come with a penalty for some of us.

It may be because these foods when consumed, increase the acid load in the body.  Additionally, it's been shown that even the cleanest cooked foods stimulate our immune response, as if we're fighting off an invader.

One of the ways the body compensates for acids and substances it doesn't like is to retain extra water as a buffer.  Thus the "weight gain" and more bloated appearance.  This seems to vary based on the individual.  Some hardly notice anything, and others are impacted substantially.

Doesn't mean that clean cooked items must be avoided, but that's up to each person the determine the level of health vs convenience/economics/sociality then need.  But raw produce will always be king of the mountain.

That's interesting Windlord. I was also told by someone that it is all about the digestion, if your body doesn't digest it well, it will lead to weight gain. I definitely have a LOT of trouble digesting oats, but no issues with potatoes. It's just absurd how it packs the weight on though...

So I guess the experiment for me, next is to eat more avocadoes for instance, rather than potatoes.

Thanks for the information.

Sure you're welcome to experiment, though I think you'll have more success with making fresh fruit cals your staple.  Even a good fat such as avos should still average no more than around 10% of your daily cals.

WindLord, let me clarify. I mean that I try to keep my fat intake to no overts and replace with cooked starches. I sometimes get tired of "sweet". I have a savory tooth, I almost never crave sweet, only savory. So sometimes I need a "break" from sweet fruit as it begins to make me crazy and I will try filling in with raw whole fats up to 15% of my diet on some days.

Don't forget about the greens and non-starchy vegetables! Puts an end to the savory craving for me!

Honestly I can eat 4 lb of greens a day and I STILL crave savory. It's more that I just get tired of the sweet. I don't naturally LIKE sweet, or have a sweet tooth. I naturally go for savory starchy foods and detest sweet desserts and sweet fruits like grapes. It's not that they bother me, I just don't like the sweet taste much unless it is in tropical fruit, which I love (mango, jackfruit, etc.). I love potatoes for that reason, potatoes are like my ultimate food.

Gotcha.  Fine to play around with it; 15% isn't too far out of bounds.  I'd just have it in your final meal of the day, and avoid any fruit afterward.

Have you ever tried savory green stews?  Even though they're not the best staple greens due to oxalate content, spinach or collards blended with strong tomatoes and cauliflower, with plenty of other veggies chopped in for texture can satisfy that savory hankering.

I eat regular fruit, smoothies, etc.
