If that works for you then you're probably the best judge.
He does say:
"Our requirements vary dramatically, depending on activity levels, climate, altitude, potassium intakes, kidney function and other factors. We can adapt to intakes as low as 69mg but its generally recommended to consume around 450-500mg per day."
He does say "the body can adapt to intakes as low as 69mg", but I'm not sure what that is based on and under what conditions. Are you craving salt?
There have been many discussions here on potassium vs. sodium balance. The more potassium we eat supposedly the more sodium we need. You may want to look at your average potassium intake as well. I also find that I crave celery on hot days when I'm out and about (more active) = sweat more.
Over the last 5.5 months, I have gotten an average of 480mg per day mostly from greens and celery but also from melons such as cantaloupe and honeydew. I eat 2300-2500 calories per day on average.
hmm.... well my potassium intake is incredibly high. I'm one of those dorks that put's everything I eat into CRON-o-Meter everyday so I can tell you exactly how high :) I did a nutritional report for the month and it looks like I average 12,960 mg of potassium and 199 mg of sodium. That's higher sodium that I thought I was getting. It looks like the days that I eat a big spinach/romaine salad it balances out somewhat. You must eat a lot more greens than I do. I try for at least 10oz per day but I miss a few days per week.
oh, and I actually despise celery! lol. I haven't ate anything with salt on it in so long that I can't even imagine what it would be like to crave it... :) I do love melons though and haven't had any for awhile.
Well now I'm wondering about my drastic potassium:sodium ratio... I'm going to have to do some searching on here! thanks :)
i take that back. My month was seriously skewed because I had a salad with some dehydrated tomatoes and CRON-o-meter thought that they had sodium in them (like most do). My average sodium is actually 122mg. Even worse!
Hi Matthew. I'm not sure if that's bad. Today I had 13,920 potassium and 199mg sodium. I have 3 heads of celery in the fridge, but I have no desire to eat any. The previous number I gave you was an average. Over the summer I was eating melons and celery 'cos it gets really hot hear in Florida : ) and perspiration increases salt cravings ... I wouldn't worry about it too much if you're not craving salt and if your blood work says your sodium and potassium levels are within or not far off from "normal" range.
