I can't find anyone to consistently buy in bulk with me and the local organic warehouse has a $150 minimal order. That's an awful lot of food for one person at one time. It's pretty overwhelming; I end up doing stuff you're not supposed to like freezing bananas.
What's the biggest bulk order you can handle at once? Any suggestions?
haha.. well thats good to know. Not like I have anything else in my freezer anyway! ice. bananas, strawberries and probably some dates soon! Depends on how fast I can eat 10lbs
It's mainly because foods lose certain vitamins/minerals when frozen, but not a huge extent. It's still the best way to preserve fresh foods, so I always do it! Plus, like you guys I love my banana ice cream. :)
Also - frozen/super cold foods inhibit the body's natural ability to produce B12.
It's certainly a wonderful feeling to have all that produce around me! My own personal horn of plenty.
This seems to be working out well. It's a constant dance of gauging what fruit needs to be eaten immediately, what can sit around for awhile and what I can freeze and what I can't freeze. I'm scarfing down figs but if too many come ripe too fast they are absolutely wonderful for tossing into the freezer and later putting them into a banana smoothie. I also have melons and nectarines that I would never freeze, personally. If too many ripen too quickly, I'll share the bounty with loved ones. My friends think I'm a nutcase for sitting down to a meal in front of a whole flat of fruit!
I usually do my bulk order twice a month. I have some help with the bananas because the kiddo loves em. i usually buy a case freeze what I cant get to. I usually buy a few bags of spinach, a few cases of nectarines (because they have them -.o ) I bought like 4 boxes of tomatoes, a bag of lemons, 2 boxes of oranges, big box of strawberries, lots of blackberries, and a case of dates.
I freeze the berries if they are getting too ripe. I also make fruit ice cream, rotate my produce in the fridge. I also have a salad every night so it helps because they are like 2 lbs of spinach, and I blend up tomatoes and fruit for the dressing. I have usually a big smoothie or banana milk in the morning. its a good way to use up tons of fruit. Sometimes I throw like 6 bananas in the blender with some dates, good way to use it up. it also tastes friggin amazing.
so between freezing fruit and huge ### salads I usually go through more than $100 biweekly. sometimes its like $150. I am saving huge on it because I have tried doing it at safeway, and between a few bags its like $80 or $90 and it only lasts a few days. I also grow food in the summer so it helps. ALL of my waste goes to compost, so its not really getting wasted.
hope this helps ^.^
