How do you guys avoid wasting fruit??
I try to plan but sometime I end up throwing some away and family members get extremely upset with me...
Although they throw away bad milk and bread all the time :)

That's a great idea :)
I have over 40kg of nanas at home right now, my freezer holds 98kg, getting a freezer was something I couldn't afford, thats what I thought, but now I realize its a HUGE saver, freeze smoothies, nanas, fruit berries, economy packs anything,
get a huge freezer today!
hehe meeee tooooooooo! and now its almost full, I'm eating like a winner these days!
I have the same problem.
Gonna start a war to conquer the "freezer territory", Fruit vs Meat/ice cream!
that is silly. even if you don't eat fruit, you're not really throwing it away. that's the great thing about fruit. you can put old fruit in your backyard ground, but you can't put old milk there i don't think.
Blend the fruit into smoothies, and put in freezer. Lasts forever and always available,
I got round this by including more dates in my diet and buying a bit less juicy fruit. I buy fruit once a week and eat the fresh stuff that's most ripe first and then when that all runs out i switch to dates for the last couple of days, with whatever else I happen to have left. Maybe you could try that too. Have a great day, Esperanza xxx
@Ashley,
I know the ironies. People throw food away all the time. Even in nature, some animals do not finish their meals.
But when we buy fruit...that is too much money...well how much did your wine and caviar cost?
Throw it away...well what about the casserole in the fridge you just threw away?
******
Having said that, it is an art form that can be mastered eventually. Sometimes I make a quick trip to the store every 3-4 days. Sometimes, I have to eat those things that are ripest even if I am not quite craving them or in the mood.
I throw less and less away, but to be honest with you, I had some guava that went from good to rotten in what felt like 60 seconds and I will throw them away today. I do not take risks with over ripe, rotting, and fermenting fruits. They can give you a belly ache and or diarrhea.
Peace, PK
Ever since I started composting it doesn't bother me that much when food goes to "waste" because I know that it isn't really going to waste anymore since it will be used to produce more food for me in the future. (What I can't eat my garden gladly will.) Giving some of your fruit away in times when you know that you aren't going to have time to eat it all might also help to lessen that "wasteful" feeling and inspire healthy changes in others at the same time.
Learning how to predict how much fruit you are going to eat in a week takes time and you will get a lot better at it over time. I still haven't fully mastered it myself, but it is very rare these days that I actually have to throw out fruits and vegetables due to not being able to eat them before they went bad. My problem is always the exact opposite (buying less than I need and running out)
I'll take your problem of having more fruit than you can eat over not having any ripe fruit around any day : ) That sounds like paradise to me, but I can understand why you wouldn't want to be paying for food that you aren't eating. Maybe you could buy a bit less fresh fruit and keep a big box of dates in your refrigerator since they can last in a refrigerator for months and you can simply turn to them if you run out of fruit that goes bad quickly.
