30 Bananas a Day!

I just moved into a room with a sunny deck. Now I have a great place to eat meals. Yes! Unfortunately a couple of wasp families have made their homes under the window that provides access to the deck. Just now, as I climbed out there with some mangoes and a cutting board, two wasps started circling around me, so I had to retreat back into my room. I'd like to be able to hang out on my deck, anyone know of good ways to evict wasps?

Get a hose, and spray. I mean, one of those garden hoses that can do a semi hard pressure spray. That way you can be many feet away from it when the water hits. Conversely, you could spray from the doorway to your patio - open it just enough for your hand to hold the hose.

I've always used this method over those chemical laden wasp sprays. I've never gotten stung, and it seems like I do it every summer. Just make sure you get every bit of the nest washed away.

Now, I realize this isn't "humane" ... and maybe some vegans would have a problem with this. But, I thought I'd just put my method out there anyway.
Thanks for your input! I hadn't thought about using a hose. Only problem is that I'm on the second floor and the porch is pretty small, so I wouldn't be able to be very far from the nests...
greetings ddddave!

we have wasps around here all through the summer. i can see some logic in removing them from high traffic areas, but otherwise it is quite possible to co-exist with them. it's best to remove them if possible before they put a lot of labor into building the nest. however, if a nest is already there, after it is abandoned it is unlikely there will be another one in the vicinity, so apparently this sort of thing works:

(though we don't buy from canadian tire because they support hunting and fishing)

we put a bit of fruit out for them away from where we are so they hang out in their own place. they also spend a lot of time in our open compost along with the rats and other creatures.

they've really surprised us as far as knowing who is who too. my son and i did an experiment where he ate apples and gave some to them. after that they'd come around him instead of me even when i had the apples.

interesting, Prad! I've been spending a lot of time with bugs recently (I left my job and have few human friends! hahaha) and have been so blown away with our interactions! They're so much more intelligent and aware than we give them credit...Thanks for sharing :) love, lily
lily,

bugs can make good friends! many humans don't so i'm with you on this. :D
in fact, i am a recluse. i used to be merely unsociable, but with my son's help i have become a recluse. you can get a lot more stuff done that way. :D

once we get over the what we are taught and take the initiative to learn, many things are discovered.

my son has regularly not only observed the 'little people' of our planet, he's always tried to assist them regardless of the number of legs they have eg eight or six or four or two or even none. :D

a few days ago we were both surprised to see a centipede guarding its eggs as we were moving a sawdust pile it was in - we didn't think they did that. it certainly would seem to be the case though:

In 1987 SASI had a centipede lay eggs, also from a wild mating. It took approximately 3 weeks for the eggs to hatch and another 3 weeks for the neonates to molt. During this entire time, the mother was very attentive to them.

On May 31, the eggs flattened out somewhat and one could begin to see the form of the centipede within. The mother was very protective, staying curled around them. She had not eaten or had any water since the eggs were laid.

the centipede and future offspring have a new home in an area we made for salamanders several years ago.

it is long in fact, in two parts, but it is revealing.

actually, that entire thread is a good one i find with many interesting ideas brought to light about bees as well as humans.

Prad, I enjoyed the bee thread even though it made me feel like a jerk after having taken the nests down. I hope the wasps were able to make a new home where they won't be disturbed. Unfortunately, it was either me or them on my deck. Maybe I can do something nice for them in the future...
they'll be fine dave.
sometimes we do things and realize later that there may have been another way.
it is through these realizations that we learn about nature and ourselves.

the wasps won't think you're a jerk - they'll just get on with life and make the most of the time given to them ... and, though i cannot prove it, i think they would be glad knowing that they have a new friend in you.

in certain situations, it really is the thought that counts.

Never done this but heard it's possible: smoke them into a stupor, cover the nest with a paper bag and cinch it around the attachment cord on the nest. Wear long-armed gloves like kitchen thick kitchen gloves. Use a long serrated bread knife (or hey, a saw) to saw the attachment off - it's a little string thing, but super strong so you might have to really saw it. They will be slow from the smoke. This sounds like an adventure. Stand strong!
