30 Bananas a Day!

Hello all,

Recently I've been having some problems. I feel as though no matter how much sleep I get, water to drink, carbs I eat, etc., I never feel energized.  I've also been seeing a therapist for quite some time and have not gotten rid of my depression, so she and my mom scheduled a doctor's appointment to run blood tests to make sure I'm getting all the nutrients I need.

Another confusing thing is that in cross country this past fall, my 5k times slowed down by four minutes, and I just seem to keep putting on weight.

*Disclaimer: I am not high carb raw vegan and have never been. I am just a regular cooked vegan who crams in the carbs (rice, pasta, fruit. I plan to go raw till 4 when I grow up and can buy all of my own food outside of a meat-eating household). I also supplement B12.

So, other than the sun (because it never seems to show up around where I live) where the heck should I go for Vitamin D? I'm starting to wonder if that's why things are funky. I've heard about certain mushrooms that have it.

Any insight would be appreciated. :)

You basically have to supplement if you're low or not getting enough sun. There aren't really any worthwhile plant sources. D3 is best but usually non-vegan as it's made from lanolin, however there are a few brands that offer vegan D3 supplements now. The consensus is that you can safely take up to 10,000 IU per day. To correct a deficiency you'll want to take 5000 IU or more, to maintain your levels through the winter 1000 IU should be OK. It's best taken in the morning to avoid any interference with sleep patterns. Alternatively you could look into a vitamin D lamp but they're pretty expensive.

For practical purposes, B12 & D are the only essential nutrients you can't get from plants. There's no K2 in fresh plant foods either, only certain fermented foods, but K2 isn't strictly essential.

Thank you, Taka!

Thank you so much! That was very helpful!

Have you thought about getting one of those sun lamps ??

If you are in the US you can definitely get D by going in the sun in the summer months for 30 minutes, even if it is cloudy.  In the winter go to tanning beds, stay at level 1 beds that have more UVB rays that produce D or you can get a $40 sun lamp, sun lamps are commonly prescribed for depression so your therapist should be fine with helping you get one.

But you really need to cut the fat out, rent forks over knives from the library and have your family watch it.  Many people say this one film made them vegan over night.

thank you for the information on the sun lamp! I may invest in that for the winter months!
