30 Bananas a Day!

Hey Guys

Common question I'm sure but where are the best places to go to get your food shopping in the UK and I'm talking for cost effectiveness?

Preferably online?

 if possible or a mixture.

Aren't bananas really cheap in the UK? That's what I've been told, anyway, and am hoping it's true, as I'm moving to Manchester next month...I want to like near the wholesale organic produce market there. Happens to be in my ideal neighborhood :))) No idea, regarding online wholesale. Where do you live?

I just moved away from enar Manchester. Google for smithfields market, my brother was able to get 3 boxes of 40lb bananas for as little as £3.50 each one time! The cheapest I paid was £5 a box and I got 4 of those. On average I'd say I was paying £10-£14 a box for conventional.

There is an organic seller there too! Ask about getting "left overs" for cheap, as he doesn't carry stock over from week to week he's ready to let it go cheap, I can't remember his name but I'll have a scan through my emails.

Of all the UK supermarket chains, Waitrose IMHO has the best quality (and often the highest prices). I get my bananas from Waitrose at £0.68/kg, fairtrade but not organic. They taste the same to me as the £1.85/kg organic bananas that Waitrose sells. Always ripen very well, they take 3-4 days in general to get the spots. I haven't had any trouble with Tesco bananas either, but I did have trouble with organic bananas from Langridge Organics in London; the worst quality organic bananas I've ever seen, of the Fyffes brand which in my experience is poor quality.

In my opinion, UK in general has appallingly poor fruit availability and quality. Pricing for the few common fruits is OK'ish (for Europe) but anything a bit more exotic is prohibitively expensive.

Expensive, yes, and very friendly; however the bananas were of very poor quality. Watery, mushy, tasteless. Could be different at different times of the year, I sampled them over about 2.5 months last spring.

It also depends on how you ripen them. Mine do best when I keep bunches of bananas in a box, no other fruits, good ventilation. They ripen worse without company, and other fruits can sometimes throw them off a bit.

Hiya Craig! Bananas are super cheap in the uk! I'm living ina  small town up in Scotland now and my local grocer gets me 18kg boxes for £18 and even drops them off for me! :D

I'm getting a bike trailer soon so I can cycle round all the different shops and pickup reduced bananas or even to go haggle myself at the markets in the city. I'm happy paying £1 per kg, they're conventional but fair trade. When my budget goes up I'll be getting as much organic as possible too.

My advice is to go to google maps and zoom into your area and do a search for fruit wholesaler and see what comes up.

Hey Lee, thanks a million for this info :) I'm moving to Manchester next month and am looking forward to it. Now I have an arsenal of places to keep in mind :) I am excited about Unicorn wholesale organic market, probably expensive but I have had almost nothing organic since I started! I'm getting a rack put on my bike as soon as I get there and maybe some panier bags or sturdy detachable ones :)
Supremely gorgeous yummy organic bananas 10 a bunch for a quid at the market stall in East London. At the end the day price is slashed to 50 pence. I buy a whole load and freeze the 50 pence ones for my smoothies. I practically live on 'em for  cost effectiveness. Farmer's markets are great for picking up a whole load of produce. Or good old Spitalfield's.  As for online shopping... speaking from poverty stricken student days Asda helped. Even shite Tesco is a rip off. I'm trying to get my own allotment but it's near a sewage site which puts me off. :)
Hey guys

thanks for the replys so far.
what are your general costs for your whole month of food shopping?

I'd say about 40-60 squidlies a month at the moment, I'll be happily spending more than that very soon though but that's got me by with enough bananas as a staple and I always get my variety of fruit when the stores have deals or discounts.

My main greens are from locally grown romaine and kale, sometimes spinach too.

I simply cant live hard without my yellow skinned spotty rocket bars.
Me neither....perhaps I could if I lived in mangoland :))
