30 Bananas a Day!

I saw a talk from Tim on Sunday and he was an excellent speaker. The interesting thing to me is his diet, Harley and Tim have very different diets as far as caloric intake is concerned but both seem to be in the best shape of their lives. Tim says he currently consumes 2500 calories a day and runs around 100 miles a week. Tim also says that he gets his b12 from dirty farmland air and unwashed produce and that his blood tests show sufficient levels of b12.

 

Any opinions?

According to something I had read earlier, and Tim also mentioned is that excess calories can be dealt with in 3 ways: Stored as Fat, Burned off as Heat, or Pass through undigested. So it seems the answer is to discover what your body does.
Excess would be more than he burns off and more than he stores. Carbohydrates have a fairly high thermic effect and so some energy is naturally burned off as heat as they are digested, I am assuming that when he says "utilized immediately" he means fed to individual cells for immediate use, and storage is the glycogen in the liver and muscle tissues. There is a limit to how much glycogen can be stored, unlike fat. So excess of what the body immediately needs in the cells, can store in glycogen, or burns off during digestion, yeah that would turn into fat.
In his videos he shows or talks about making smoothies and that he adds hemp (or flax?) seeds to it. That may be related. Or that in combination with that he may not have accurately counted his calories or that the day he did count did not represent other days.
Based on my conversation with him, I doubt inaccuracy is at play here.
Someone at the Woodstock Fruit Festival should volunteer to be his calorie accountant for the week.

As far as I know Tim doesn't use a calorie counter to track his daily calories (like 811ers) so that may mean his estimation is a guess. When I track my calories everyday it never comes back with the same figure everyday. It varies greatly.

 

Also how was Tims b12 levels tested? The standard serum test often comes back inaccurate so to rule out a deficiency urinary MMA and homocysteine levels need to be taken. 

 

I have listened to him speak on Mp3, he is awesome and entertaining!

After talking to him and listening to him speak, I'm pretty sure he is aware of how to accurately test b12, it's possible for sure, but again, his race results also speak loudly.
I highly doubt it Josh, I know several prominent people in raw who didn't have a clue about the proper testing methods (including myself) and also MANY Dr's, it's not common knowledge, although it should be.

Tim runs 100miles a week?

Ive averaged LESS than 10miles a week running this year.

 

Tim's most recent 10k time is 35:18 from June 2010.

My most recent 10k time is 36:07 from March 2011.

(Both times are gps measured and recorded.)

 

Tim eats 2500cals a day?

Freelee often eats over 3000 a day and sit on her ass most of the day too lol! She runs around 20miles a week consistently.

 

Would Tim do well on b12 injections. Well ALL the runners I know that are elite class do em and only a handful are vegans. That Tim's choice and based on his past health history, Id happily give him some jabs.

 

Tim is a high energy dude. Great entertaining speaker. Elite athlete. Down to earth guy. I rate him and promote him in most of my videos. He does carry too much muscle as a runner and that slows him down but obviously he enjoys how he lives, eats and looks so power to him.

 

2500cals a day? NAH! ;)

 

 

 

 

Having upper body strength SLOWS you down as a runner. Here is a guy I used to race with, Paul Crake. He won the Empire State Stair Climb 5 times. He was in a race with my mate Scott in the Southland Tour and they both crashed and unfortunately Paul got some severe spinal injuries.

 

Tim runs EXTREMELY well for someone with  so much muscle. Sure Tim could run even faster if he trimmed down to a runners physique but then the same crew that say 'fruit makes you fat!' would say 'look at Tim, he is too thin..'. lol!

 

 

 

 

That above is an old shot. Here is the most recent one from this month. No WAY someone is running competitive ultras for a few years and looking like a heavyweight kickboxer lol!

 

 

 

Karno is an ambassador for the sport and a cool guy (Ive talked with him before) but not a fast ultra runner. Scott Jurek is the most dominating male Ultra runner in the history of the sport. He is of a optimum runners build.

 

That's why growing your own food is so important IMO.
