30 Bananas a Day!

I just got my blood results back (over the phone, don't have the paperwork yet)
And the main problem (actually the only problem) was a low Vitamin D count.
So I was a little pissed but very soon it hit me.

I was looking at is as a weakness. Why do I have to supplement and other people (SAD eaters) don't?

But the real truth is that SAD eaters do get Vitamin D supplements.
And they get them all the time.

Apparently there are not enough food sources to assure a good level of Vitamin D. There are only a few food sources that contain Vitamin D.
Fatty fish, wild salmon, cod liver oil, some mushrooms.

So to ensure people get enough vitamin D it is added to all kinds of foods.
Like dairy products, cereals, flour, baby foods, some brands of orange juice.

All kinds of foods that we vegans do not eat.

So it is not abnormal that those of us who do not live in a very sunny climate might need to supplement.

Dr. D recommends for those living far from the equator to go on a 2 week warm and sunny vacation mid-winter to maintain healthy D levels.  Second best may be UV bulbs, third, supplements.

You tell me how I live in -35 weather  right now and I don't take any vitamin d supplements made from animals?

 

Remember tests results are based on the "norm" whatever that is.

 

How in the world does pastuerized orange juice have Vitamin D.

From algae that get it from the sun. What are you trying to say? I know Vitamin D is the "sun" vitamin.

You take supplements made from other sources? Like D2, or vegan Vitamin D?

Because it's fortified. That's the whole idea. Vitamin D gets added to a lot of foods. And that's how SAD eaters get their Vit D supplements.

Sometimes if you wan't to say something it's easier to just say it. I'm not good at picking at hints.

 

The doctor said my Phosphorus level was also low and that can be caused by low Vit D levels.

 

According to Cron-O-Meter I'm at 170% with phosphorus.  So it's not lacking in my diet.

 

Have you ever checked your Vitamin D levels BigG?

Your a smart man your figuring the doctor may not be right.

 

What is unbelievable is that you and others might start to believe that pastuerized orange juice will have something of any real value especially Vitamin D with which they refrain from telling you what and how they add it.

 

Maybe look at taking blue green algae?

 

No need to check my blood for Vitamin D nor any other thing because I go back to the basics whenever my body tells me something is off.

 

Maybe look at doing some physical activities outside for example I walk my harry kids.

 

I just go back to this and do a quick check.

 

All Blood work does is tell you to go back to these important factors anyways. So for me it is a waste of time and blood.

That still means you need to get out in the sun.

I have south facing windows and love it when the sun comes out. But the sun is not out that often here this time of year. And the last two summers I never took the time off to spend some time just laying around in the sun.

 

I know I should, but ...

Maybe I wasn't clear but I don't think pasteurized OJ has any value at all. I don't come near it. I juice my 15 oranges fresh every morning.

 

But what I mean is that it does provide SAD eaters with Vit D.

 

And that's the way SAD eaters get their supplements.

They don't get to choose them themselves. The choice has already been made for them.

I really don't know. I don't have any so I can't check.

So it's possible that OJ does not get fortified. I do however remember seeing a box of cookies in the store recently that advertised Vitamin D amongst other vitamins.

I looked at the ingredient list and they were all added vitaimins.

 

Hence my point that SAD eaters get Vit D supplements.

Where is the proof that it is in the Juice?

 

What are they actually fortified with?

 

I would encourage next time your in a store read the fortified product and check what they fortify it with and if they don't list call the company with the contact information and ask them "what is the source of the Vitamin D".

 

Let them reveal themselves.

 

So if we know that high heat destroys nutrients then lets bet if they add dead fish to it that it ain't raw so how can it be used properly?  and if it was fortified with fish/ mushrooms etc. don't you think you would taste it.

 

Question the clever marketing it will save you lots of money and time.

 

Break it down not only for this but anything really.

I have never looked into the OJ - Vit D mystery so I don't know what source of Vit D etc.

 

I also don't care.

The point I was trying to make was that foods get fortified with vitamin D and that's how people get supplemented.

 

We vegans don't eat these foods (like flour, milk, cereals, cookies, etc.) so we don't get supplemented automatically and we might therefore need to supplement ourselves if we don't spend enough time in the sun.

Had not occurred to me that commercial OJ may not be even vegetarian...
