I was just wondering what people think about going to a tanning bed if you live somewhere that skin exposure outdoors may cause amputation. My skin has been asking to see the sun lately but its to cold to expose it to long. What do I do?
I can't afford a tropical vacation right now and don't want to wait until spring to get some rays. What do you think?
Why would skin exposure outdoors cause amputation because of the cold? Probably that is why. Anyway tanning beds are ok but often they are not are too UVA strong. UVB is better for vitamin D production. If you can afford it you may consider a Narrow band UVB light that you can purchase and use at home. Here is one you might consider. There is the full body ones or you can get the spot ones which is the 500 series it is for hands feet or spot. I am actually considering getting the 500 series. Only problem is you have to get a doctors "prescription" in order to get it in the US. So I am hoping perhaps my doctor will okay it since I have been diagnosed with a vitamin D deficiency. We will see. There are other UVB lights that are less expensive options. I just don't know if they are as high quality as these.
I'm curious also! I live in Seattle and could definitely use some sun. I'm considering going 1-2 times a week and laying in a low setting bed.
I tan once a week or two weeks in the winter for like 5-10 minutes at a time. I think the benefits of feeling happy and full of vitamin d outweigh the negatives of UVA/UVB exposure. Plus, if you're living this lifestyle, you're giving your body what it needs to be able to anti-oxidize the UVA/UVB. I mean, skin cancer wasn't always a huge killer in the u.s., until the advent of processed foods and a Standard American Diet and now it's everywhere supposedly. Tanning beds are definitely not ideal, but I feel it benefits me greatly (mood, energy level) and makes the winter more berable.
It's 25F and windy out this morning so I don't think I'll go for a jog in my shorts. Thanks for the feedback about tanning beds. I thought it would be an OK alternative and you folks confimed it.
