I went to Flemington Markets in Sydney on October 20 and didn't buy organic but I was delighted with the purchases I made. The retail section closes at 2pm so I got there around 12.45pm. As I hoped, once the sellers started packing up, the prices started coming down. I found:
13kg case bananas - ripe = $13
13kg case bananas - unripe = $15
10kg box of small/med gourmet tomatoes (delicious and the last 20 are on the final stages of ripeness now) = $20, reduced to $10
4kg mostly small mushrooms with around a dozen portobello-looking mushrooms included = $10, reduced to $5
12 BIG mangos (heavenly!) = $40, reduced to $30
1kg new season New Zealand walnuts = $10, reduced to $5
15 count plastic-wrapped Telegraph cucumbers, in a bag = $10, reduced to $5
3 punnets strawberries = $5, reduced to $3 (I would only buy them if I was eating them all no later than the next day; they got fuzzy quick so my chickens loved them)
I bought a bag of pears ($2/kg) but they've gone mushy with a hard interior rather than ripe-soft. I'll experiment with pearsauce in the Vitamix because they're not "delicious" to eat out of hand but haven't caused me any problems eating a pear to check their progress. They smell wonderful, though, and I'm fondling them every day.
