30 Bananas a Day!

france has second lowest heart disease rate in the world??? why?

hi guys im currently still debating with my uncle about going high carb vegan and he is on the cusp to wanting to try it out!

he recently asked about stats on the health of france and italy (he thinks they are healthier than the US even though they eat loads of animal foods) i went to worldlifeexpectancy.com and found great info for him on how italy actually has a higher percentage of people who die from heart disease than america and how france has similar numbers. i looked at the exact number of people who died in eaach country (france, italy and US) and compared it with the number of people in each country and found the percent. i did this with other diseases too

you can find these stats and numbers on www.worldlifeexpectancy.com/world-rankings-total-deaths

my uncle then went to that same website and found a totally different page with different stats

that somehow showed that france has the second least amount of people (death rate per 100,000) die of heart disease. this list is so confusing to me and i dont see how these stats are possible because they dont add up when i calculate the exact numbers. this list also says other countries have lower or higher rates that dont seem to make sense compared to the other pages of info.

u can find this page at http://www.worldlifeexpectancy.com/cause-of-death/coronary-heart-di...

is anybody good at this stuff?

can someone help me out and help me explain how hes looking at the data wrong and this is the wrong way to compare disease rates between countries?

would love your help cuz i KNOW france does not have the lowest heart disease rate in the world. pffh. ha!

now that you've piqued his interest...you might get the book Diet For A New America from the library, it has great statistics and graphs with reputable  documentation to show him!

thank u i will totally get this book! this particular graph he is looking at makes him believe france is a healthy nation. it says they are the second to least country that has the least amount of people die of heart disease and i want to make sense of it for him. im confused myself it does look this way

French typically eat a lot less. Its fashion to starve over there. Worked for my step grandma and mother. Well for a bit anyways. Grandpa died from massive heart attack and my Mum is now clinically obese.

One can only starve for so long. Even then the damage of excess dietary cholesterol and sat fat will takes its toll.

They may have less heart disease, but they have a lot other problems. Portions are a lot smaller, like Harley said. Lots of weight watching...

When my boyfriend arrived here (in Québec, Canada) he told me that he was surprised how everything transformed was salty and sweet-tasting.

But they have dementia, Alzheimer, breast and colon cancer, etc. etc. Depends where you live in France, they have really different diet. North, Alpes, South....

Where my boyfriend comes from, they typically eat almost nothing in the morning, a large lunch and charcuterie with bread and cheese for dinner. His grand mother had breast cancer, colon cancer, and she struggles with her thyroid and her hormonal balance now...

They are overall relying on a lot of drugs... Antidepressant, hard core sleeping pills... Doctors apparently give them like candies.

thank harley. its so curious though as heart disease is still their number one killer so i cant seem to make sense of the data for my uncle.

i teach ESl to students from all different countries and i often have conversations about disease and health with them.  all of my students from western europe (italy, france, switzerland, etc.) know people who are close to them who have the same diseases we have. they are not healthier! I don't know why that website is misleading. and when I was living in Northern Italy, i met a lot of overweight people, and some people not overweight, just like in the US.  but I also heard a lot of chatter about dieting.  they were constantly yo-yo dieting trying to lose weight for swim suit season.  but they can't resist their amazing food!

europeans may appear to be healthier because their portions are smaller and there isn't a fast food joint on every corner.  but the diseases we get are not strangers to them.
