I know they're all the Cavendish variety but they taste quite different. So what is your favorite brand? My personal favorite is definitely the Organics Unlimited/GROW brand, I think they taste way better the the common Dole brand which I now avoid. Also they're cheaper and more locally grow in Mexico, as I live in Los Angeles. You will notice they don't get big spots just more black streaks as they start to ripen up.
These are my favorites, too!
Turbana Organic Fair-Trade is really good; good plantains too.
Del Monte Organic is good consistent quality too in my experience.
Chiquita seems to be inconsistent in quality.
That being said I usually get Dole Organic as it's what's available to me.
I agree that organics unlimited are the best I've had.
where I live now I only get dole or chiquita...frankly I think chiquita are better but it is only a slight difference. I'm talking about organics here of course. I noticed the organics unlimited brand ripened more predictably than the other brands, but I'm not sure about the spots it's been over a year so maybe I don't remember.
I've found organic Chiquitas to be my favourites - but maybe just because they're so large ;)
Organic Doles ripen beautifully so come second!
And third would be the Fairtrade variety we have here in the UK - delicious but take a long while to ripen, and they're often sold green.
Honestly dole organic are the most reliable and readily available for me, I hate Chiquita, they never ripen right...
But I love equal exchange bananas whenever I can get them! They are prefered and taste way better, plus they are far more sustainable. :)
I need to move to LA! Those mangoes in the background look divine :D
Yeah you do! For $1.75 per case you beat the price, that's like 19 cents per mango, organic of course!
a dollar and 3 quarters per case!? damn man our mangoes are 2 for $3 organic in florida right now
2 for $3 bucks is a good price at a normal market. I shop at an organic wholesale market that's open to the public, the normal price would have been $5.25 per case. I got them for cheap because they were #2's all that means is they're ripe or alomst ripe, I seen them throwing away hundreds of ripe mangos! It was sad to see but these people aren't like us in terms of diet!
I too live in LA and would love to know where this organic wholesale market is.. We go to Better Life organics ... Do you know where to get any mameys or other exotic fruits like that in LA? thanks
I don't know where to get any exotic fruits. You said you shop at Better Life, that is the organic wholesale market..
dude mameys, right across from better life now! you know the mexican mango stand out front, directly across in that open\almost abandoned looking building they sell cases of mameys.. mangolicious just found us a case there, the guy overheard her asking the mango guy for mameys! from cuba covered in some super exotic black dirt, so stoked to try them.
