i haven't really checked around locally much yet for different fruit suppliers but that is my next mission. transportation is somewhat difficult for me at the moment but i'm working on that.
i've seen people mention ordering different higher quality fruits on this site from different areas of the U.S. namely dates and banana.
where can i order fruit like this from?!?! and it is a wise idea?
i will be able to drive soon enough here so i will then be able to actually go look around the city and see what else is out there...
7hotdates.com is where I order dates from. Bautista farm in California. Great dates and very good prices. Shipped right to your door.
Talk about wise--these dates rule!
Contact them by phone to discuss bulk pricing which starts with 15 lb orders.
Lindsay Culclassure here recommends Shields as well.
AWESOME! how long do dates keep for?
Dates are a highly variable crop as far juiciness goes, depending on seasonality and variety.
But some of the best of quite juicy indeed. They probably won't even last long enough for you to worry about keeping them.
They'll be fine in the fridge for a couple weeks, and keep quite well in the freezer in freezer bags for months.
awesome thanks! would i go with the ice cream bananas?
hmm seems like i might be too poor for all this right now.. lol :(
If you talk to a manager at the local stores and find out when they get shipments and if you can order a regular shipment sometimes they will work out prices for you. Also, sometimes you can make a deal with them for the spotted ones, they tend to not sell and thats the ones you want to eat. Sometimes to works out better to stay local.
In a pinch though its dried you can even find boxes of dried dates that are not added sugar etc in the dried fruit section in walmart for $1
hope this helps its a great start when you don't have alot of start up money. I also cruise the sales for bags of fruit and the farmers market for fresh greens. sometimes you can strike deals with them if you go once a week to them.
also though it isn't fresh I think many can agree its better than falling right off the wagon, you can find sales on flash frozen goods like greens and fruits in the freezer section. sometimes its more cost effective.
once you learn the stores and the sales and meet enough people you can budget for the fresh stuff in abundance, and when you save lots from the other stuff you usually splurge on youll be able to buy by the boxes.
