Quotes related to animals and there rights, that anyone can use in daily posts or discussions.

"Animals have done us no harm and they have no power of resistance. Cruelty to animals is as if man did not love God. There is something so very dreadful, so Satanic, in tormenting those who have never harmed us, who cannot defend themselves, who are utterly in our power."
Cardinal John Henry Newman (1801-1890)

"A man can live and be healthy without killing animals for food; therefore, if he eats meat, he participates in taking animal life merely for the sake of his appetite. "
Leo Tolstoy

"Many people feel drawn to advocate for animals because even though they can feel pain and suffer just as we do, they do not have a way to advocate for their own welfare. In fact, animals are viewed by many as nothing more than property to be treated however the owner wishes. This view has created an inhumane situation for billions of animals that share our world.
"
Robert Alan

"Life is life--whether in a cat, or dog or man. There is no difference there between a cat or a man. The idea of difference is a human conception for man's own advantage. "
Sri Aurobindo

"Until we have the courage to recognize cruelty for what it is--whether its victim is human or animal--we cannot expect things to be much better in this world..."

Rachel Carson

"We cannot have peace among men whose hearts delight in killing any living creature. By every act that glorifies or even tolerates such moronic delight in killing we set back the progress of humanity. "
Rachel Carson

"The love for all living creatures is the most noble attribute of man.
"
Charles Darwin

And a favourite…

"I ask people why they have deer heads on their walls. They always say because it's such a beautiful animal. There you go. I think my mother is attractive, but I have photographs of her."
Ellen DeGeneres
Hi,

Freelee I used one of the quotes today you posted

"A man can live and be healthy without killing animals for food; therefore, if he eats meat, he participates in taking animal life merely for the sake of his appetite. "
Leo Tolstoy

It sure caused a bit of a stir.

I used that in a discussion that was taking place about a German Sheppard Rescue org. having a fund raiser and they would be using a barbacue event.

I basically told asked them

Not sure if it is a good idea to alleviate suffering for one type of animals and take part in the suffering of other animals.

It sure struck a nerve with a few ;-)

Take Care,
Cool BigG nice one!! Hard to avoid such truths as one gnaws on another beings flesh.

Not sure if it is a good idea to alleviate suffering for one type of animals and take part in the suffering of other animals.

Well said.
Oh my gosh, BigG, this is a powerful quote and the fact it's from a Cardinal is powerful too. It reminds of something I read in the awesome book, Committed. The author says that the lead singer for the Smiths told him that he always saw animals the same way he sees children, totally innocent and at at our mercy. I wish I had the exact quote.

There is something unique about quotes on animals and their rights that really moves me, I love reading them, thanks for sharing and starting this thread. :)
"Since compassion for animals is so intimately associated with goodness of character, it may be confidently asserted that whoever is cruel to animals cannot be a good man."

"The assumption that animals are without rights and the illusion that our treatment of them has no moral significance is a positively outrageous example of Western crudity and barbarity. Universal compassion is the only guarantee of morality."
Arthur Schopenhauer.

“Truly man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds theirs. We live by the death of others: we are burial places! I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look on the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men.”
Leonardo Da Vinci.

“Nothing will benefit human health and increase the chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.”
Albert Einstein.

“It ill becomes us to invoke in our daily prayers the blessings of God, the Compassionate, if we in turn will not practice elementary compassion towards our fellow creatures.”
Gandhi.

“To become vegetarian is to step into the stream which leads to nirvana.”
Buddha.

“He is closest to God who harms no living creature.”
Bhagavad Gita.
on the theme of violence are several quotes below.

"For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love."
Pythagoras, mathematician

"I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look upon the murder of men."
Leonardo da Vinci, artist and scientist

"While we ourselves are the living graves of murdered beasts, how can we expect any ideal conditions on this earth?"
George Bernard Shaw, playwright, Nobel Prize 1925

"In their behavior toward creatures, all men are Nazis. Human beings see oppression vividly when they're the victims. Otherwise they victimize blindly and without a thought."
Isaac Bashevis Singer, author, Nobel Prize 1978

"Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances of survival for life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet."
Albert Einstein, physicist, Nobel Prize 1921

"You have just dined, and however scrupulously the slaughterhouse is concealed in the graceful distance of miles, there is complicity."
Ralph Waldo Emerson, essayist

"As long as there are slaughterhouses, there will be battlefields."
Leo Tolstoy, author

"We cannot have peace among men whose hearts delight in killing any living creature. By every act that glorifies or even tolerates such moronic delight in killing we set back the progress of humanity."
Rachel Carson, marine biologist

"Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages."
Thomas Edison, inventor

"Until he extends the circle of his compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace."
Albert Schweitzer, missionary and statesman, Nobel 1952

"If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who deal likewise with their fellow men. Not to hurt our humble brethren is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission - to be of service to them wherever they require it."
Francis of Assisi, saint
Thanks guys/gals

Great quotes.

I agree ednshell they strike a chord with me for sure.

Freelee that is a great quote. Ellen has a nice way of including in her programs the veg head way of living.

Treehugger I love that Baghva Gita quote and agree 100%

I like to post these types of quotes on facebook and let people think a bit more :-)

"Perhaps the most fundamental and important truth humanity - in all of its arrogance and self-righteousness - cannot learn is that while humanity cannot live without nature, nature can live without humanity."

Dr. Steve Best (Philosophy Professor at UTEP)
excellent quote bigg
Joanna,

Thanks very nice.

I posted this one earlier on facebook I would add woman to the man part also.

‎"If a man aspires towards a righteous life, his first act of abstinence is from injury to animals."

Albert Einstein

Take Care,
The following is a quote from an extensive audio interview of T. Colin Campbell which I decided to transcribe because it's really powerful:

I’ve become very much sensitive to the fact that eating animal based foods has a lot of consequences. And those consequences for the most part… [have] to do with the way some people mistreat other people, and the way they mistreat animals, the way they mistreat the environment. I call that… ‘global violence’. Why do we do that? Why do we do the things that are often not in our best interest? And violate the rights of others… whether it’s other sentient beings, or whether it’s abuse of the environment. It’s all the same. So I just see if we chose the right kind of foods we would be decreased in violence, end of story, full stop. It’s just the way it is.

and then he goes on to discuss studies done on changing prison inmates to a plant based diet and incidents of violence going down, which is pretty cool if not very surprising.
Wow, I would love to see this study or read about it. I have so much compassion for prisoners, they are treated so poorly in most cases. There are two really powerful films I've seen that are about meditation in prison but it shows what life is really like in prison as much as you can in a film. http://www.dhammabrothers.com/Trailer.htm
