We are a Dutch family, contemplating a move to the US (NY or NJ states). We have two kids (6 and 8), who we are raising on a vegan and gluten free diet. Currently, we give them lunch boxes to school with veggies, rice and fruits. We understood that at schools in the US lunches are provided by the schools. I had a look at a typical school lunch menu and wasn't too impressed. Does anyone know if it is allowed to bring your own pre-packed lunch to school?
Great to know! Thanks!
Yes. And snacks. You do need to be careful of all the extras: birthday cupcakes that parents bring in for class, junk food at extracurricular events etc etc. You can bring in alternative treats for your child but you don't always know when this crap appears in the classroom. If there is an acceptable treat that is boxed and can last a while, you can have that available for your child.
The school lunches are trying to get better and some local schools here are introducing salad bars, but still majority of food is crap i.e. chicken nuggets, canned applesauce for fruit, cooked veggies and processed grains. But there is a trend toward improvement.
My kids homeschool but we do gym, art etc at the local school, here is there Nov.'s menu - pretty much meat based:
Bacon pizza, I mean come ON!
LOL!! And hamburger soup?? Really??
Haha, this menu looks a lot like the one I looked at. This does't make me too happy. Anyway, good to know that home made stuff is an option.
Yes, and I know at this school anyway, many folks pack their kid's lunch so it's quite common.
