30 Bananas a Day!

Interesting study showing that plants do contain cholesterol.  This is not a bad thing, I am just offering the information so the myth can be dismissed.

Dr.Graham has talked about this, but the numbers are usually so low that they dont even bother to label it.

There lies the foundation for the myth.

looks like its in various seed and bean oils, possibly edible greens too. doesn't seem like its in fruit tho, at least according to this study.

Lucas,

Most living things are made out of cells that have fatty membranes.  Cholesterol is needed in the manufacturing and maintenance of these membranes.  Humans actually produce most of the cholesterol they need in their liver.

However, too much of anything, even good things is bad, and of course if and when we overeat on animal products, we go to extremes and illnesses are caused.

Peace, PK

Thanks for posting Lucas, I did not know this! I was just writing a blog entry on the cholesterol controversy last night. need to make some changes now, and I may also need a new domain name for my blog >./p>

Consuming excess cholesterol IS bad for the arteries though, it's a pro-oxidant essentially. It increases the rate of oxidation of LDL particles by nearly 40%, which lead to the most common type of heart attack (soft plaque rupture). It also may significantly raise endogenous LDL production (up to 5x in caucasians) when consumed in conjunction with high quantities of saturated fat, which of course means greater risk for oxidized LDL and MI. Until I post the entry you can learn more here.

All this however is NBD for us fruit eaters and for vegans in general; it'd be virtually impossible to consume enough cholesterol from plant matter (50mg/kg of total fat on avg according to the article, whereas we might consume 20-30g of fat/day at absolute most with added overts) in a day to rival the amount found in a single large egg (210-275mg), unless perhaps you were chugging gallons of canola oil. The recommended daily limit for cholesterol in the US is 300mg for 'healthy' individuals, 250mg for those with heart disease btw.

Yea, I was not posting this to discredit the vegan diet. I just wanted the information out there for people so they can have an informed discussion about nutrition while at the same time getting the facts straight.
