It has come to my attention that the human race's high grain cooked food habit has not only impacted us. Our pets are typically fed a similar, but often even worse version of this diet. My family dog is currently 16 years old. She is a Miniature Schnauzer and I totally adore her. She has been a great soucre of happiness throughout my life. She has had tooth and gum decay for many years now and has also been diagnosed with renal failure. At sixteen years old, her life has been a long and mostly healthy one. Still though, I see that the diet we've fed her has been so unnatural to her and that it's cumulitive effects have begun to show.
I work now, very dilligently to provide her with better quality nutrition. And as I do this, I find the same difficulties in in people's attitudes towards what is healthy for a dog to eat, as I do with the general attitude about what is healthy for a human diet.
The myths and misconceptions about nutrition run deep. There is a lot of information that says dogs with renal failure should be eating a diet low in meat protein. And of course that doesn't make much sense, since dogs are designed for a meat-based diet. It's bizarre that vets encourage grain diets for dogs, but apparently quite a few of them do. I encourage everyone here who has pets or knows someone who has pets to start thinking about their diet as well if you haven't already. They deserve much better than the 'pet food' you see at most grocery stores.

I feed my dog a vegan diet.
So, I wrote this a few years back when my dog's health was declining and I was scrambling to improve her quality of life.
I think the pet-diet conversation is pretty complicated because dogs and cats are pretty clearly carnivorous. I've heard dogs can subsist on a vegan diet much better than cats. I used to experiment with my dog, giving her fruits and veggies. While she often liked them, she also wanted meat every chance she could get it/ got very excited by the smell any kind of meat.
I have a pet rabbit (flemish giant), she eats my scraps and loves it! left over lettuce, banana peels... perfect pet-friend for a raw vegan!!!!!
